HDR from netflix seems too dark

Aside from one ps4 game(last of us) which has hdr and looks great, i have no other true hdr source orher than netflix. Last night i tried our jessica jones and luke cage, and both seemed really dark. I went into my tv settings and turned hdr off and the color wasnt as great but everything brighened up. For example in a dim/dark scene in hdr mode someone's outfit eas so dark it was nearly black. You could see no detail on the back of her jeans. When i flipped hdr off, suddenly you could make out both back pockets and some seams in the clothing. Flipped hdr back on and the detail just washed out like it was in a shadow.

Are there some settings i need to tweak or is netflix hdr jist not all that great for some programs?

I have the XBR65X850E

Re: HDR from netflix seems too dark

Hi,

I am having the same issue with my 65" Sony OLED.  Much of the HDR content is way too dark.  Your link does not have any answers to the question posed.

Thanks,

Re: HDR from netflix seems too dark

I ended up going into the settings and turning up the gamma 1 point and that helped a little. I feel like it may judt be the content more than anything else. My ps4 pro games with 4k/hdr do not appear dark at all.

The real test will be a 4k disc movie but i probably won't get a player for a while

Re: HDR from netflix seems too dark

Yeah, I have been playing around with the settings constantly.  You can make slight tweaks but it just doesn't look like HDR is supposed to.  I have also noticed that there can be great disparity between apps.  For example, I can use the youtube app built in to the set and some of the HDR content is stunning (note: leaving the HDR setting on Auto does not work for this app.  You must switch the setting to HDR10 in order to see the brilliance of HDR capabilities).  On the other hand, looking at some shows on Netflix and Amazon Prime doens't impress so much.  Check out Bosch on Amazon or Friends from College on Netflix.  They are both terribly dark.  In the case of Bosch, a screen shot in the app program menu looks way more bright and vivid than the actual show does.  Really weird.

I'm hoping someone from Sony can chime in here.
