KD-75X8500C Aspect Ratio Problems on USB and Cast to Device.

Prior to the most recent TV software update movies could be viewed in their original aspect ratio with the black stripes at the top and bottom when using USB or Cast to Device. Now that is not the case with the image being distorted to fill the screen. The Action Menu only toggles between Expand and Fit Screen. The Width Mode button of the remote comes up with Function Unavailable. This is extremely frustrating as the option should be available through the Action Menu or Wide Mode button.

The only way that the Aspect Ratio can be displayed correctly is by playing the USB through the USB socket located in my Sony Blu-Ray Player. Any solution would be most welcoming.

Re: KD-75X8500C Aspect Ratio Problems on USB and Cast to Device.

The latest firmware update (the one from 11/24/2015) causes this issue.

You're not the only person who experienced this. I've reported the issue here: http://community.sony.com/t5/4K-Ultra-HD-TV/System-Update-11-24-2015-broke-Video-app-XBR55X850C/m-p/...

Another person has also reported it: http://community.sony.com/t5/4K-Ultra-HD-TV/Video-playback-from-USB-thumbdrive-streched/m-p/542530#U...

Basically copy and pasting the information I got from tech support: "I spoke to Sony tech support this afternoon. They said the engineering team acknowledged the issue with the built in Video app, and it would be fixed in a future firmware update. When does that update come out? No idea."

Thank you for the update that Sony is aware of the problem and others have experienced the same issue. The problem has caused many hours of frustration but it is gratifying to know that Sony will fix this issue with their next update.

Re: KD-75X8500C Aspect Ratio Problems on USB and Cast to Device.

Unfortunately Sony's most recent firmware update which I installed on the 02/20/16 has still not resolved any issues regarding the Aspect Ratio Problems on USB and Cast to Device on the KD-75X8500C. Is this issue intentional or with the problem be resolved in the near future? Why can’t Sony just reinstate the original Video drivers where there were no issues with Aspect Ratios?

Re: KD-75X8500C Aspect Ratio Problems on USB and Cast to Device.

I don't think any of us understand why Sony hasn't fixed this.  At least on my series, the X850C, have had two SW updates since they broke this on 11/24, and they haven't bothered to fix it in either update.

For now the only consistent work-around is to use another video app, like:

 - Kodi

 - Archos (and also install the Archos code pack)

 - VLC

None of those are affected, video plays in the correct aspect.

There is a work-around in the Sony Video app, but it does not work consistently/reliably:

NEW: A potential work-around using the Video app that might help in some cases to get you back to the right aspect ratio.

1. Start the video playing in the video app and then pause it.
2. Hit the Action menu - you'll see three choices in the "Video" section of the Action menu to the right:
- Expand
- Play options
- \/ (an arrow pointing down)

Scroll right to the Video menu, then two additional options on the Video menu replace the down arrow so theVideo menu shows:
-Expand
-Play options
-Information
-Settings

Expand does nothing, video stays letterboxed. Nothing on Settings helps. Play Options displays options to play multiple files, repeat, etc.

Select "Information" This opens a screen showing a preview thumbnail of the video w/an option to play the video in that view. Some of our owners have found that if they select that thumbnail of the video to play it from that view that it would start playing in the correct aspect ratio.

What a PITA that sounds like, but I'm going to try it when I get home tonight. As for the other Video apps you mention. I have tried them all and they too have their share of problems which I detailed in another thread concerning this Sony Video app problem.

The one app I have found to be awesome and with the least problems is Plex. What a great app but it too has a couple of issues.

1: 3D does not come up in the Action Menu while in Plex (or any other 3rd party video app). The work around for this is to set your 3D in another app or input (ie cable box) then go into Plex and watch your 3D video.

2: Plex must be used with the Plex DLNA server. No problem for me, it's an awesome server downloaded to my PC. I've stopped using my USB altogether.

3: No AAC 5.1 audio pass-thru. It converts to stereo as do all the other 3rd party apps. AC3, DD and DTS are no problem, just make sure all your app, device and TV audio settings are correct. Only the Sony app passes all audio codec properly.

4: Subtitles must be imbedded. Since I only use MKV files this is no problem. Many MKV files come with subtitles or MKVToolNix works great, easy and fast for adding/extracting subtitles (audio and video too) and they can still be turned off. SubScene.com is a great source for raw subtitles (SRT files).

Let me know if I've missed anything or you know something I don't. I'm always looking to learn something new.

Re: KD-75X8500C Aspect Ratio Problems on USB and Cast to Device.

I just bought a XBR75X850D and has the same problem. I cannot change the aspect ratio when it's cast to video, the HD movie tries to fill the whole display and get's stretched and distorted. Did you guys find any solution? My firmware is PKG3.411.0105NAB

Re: KD-75X8500C Aspect Ratio Problems on USB and Cast to Device.

Unfortunately Sony has not resolved the issue since the problem first occurred after an update back in November last year. It has been frustrating having to use other video apps or in my case using the USB connection in my Blu-ray  BDPS6500 which up converts to 4K.  Now my Sony Blu-ray is requesting a firmware upgrade but I am declining the update in case it also interferes with the USB aspect ratio. One can only hope that Sony listens to the issues and resolves them. Let us know if you come across an alternative solution.

All of the Video Apps mentioned below are on the Play Store, very easy to find, download, install and configure on the Android TVs.

If you're going with a DLNA server I highly recommend Plex. I'll never go back to using the built in app even if they fix it. I find Kodi confusing and difficult to set-up. Although it's and excellent app once that's done.

If you're using a Thumbdrive go with VLC or Archos. These are all very common apps and should be easy to find. Most have been updated to handle some of the issues posted in earlier/other threads.

BTW: The Sony app is still good for full 16x9 videos as well as, all Over/Under 3D. I have'nt tried casting a 2.4:1 video, so I'm not sure what to do there, and all my 16x9 videos cast perfectly.

Do youself a favor and turn off the automatic updates, I have. After much tweaking and a lot of finessing, my TV is finally working the way I want and I will not take a chance with another update.

Re: KD-75X8500C Aspect Ratio Problems on USB and Cast to Device.

Thanks for the reply. But, none of these players work when I want to stream (cast) from my local computer to the TV. I don't want to copy my media to a USB or network each time and stream to TV. I simply want to stream data, my older Samsung TV works so seamlessly! With Kodi and VLC you need to have the media files local to TV and not your computer. This's a deal breaker for me, fixing aspect ratio should be a simple patch! If I had the source code I would have don't that myself! I'm going to return the TV even though I got a super good deal for 4th of July. I'll probably go with LG or Samsung.
