Re: NO 4K streaming on VUDU!?!?

From what i understood it's not Vudu's "choice", the way it works is the TV company would need to pay for the development of an app for their specific TV. LG, Vizio, Roku, etc all did this.

As far as the Ultra app and 5.1 surround, this could easily be cleared up by them putting "5.1 Dolby" or whatever on the details when you look at the movie page. Most people probably just watch the trailer (which is 2.0 channel) and don't see anything about 5.1 and assume it's not surround sound.

The TV runs android apps.  Vudu has to have gone out of their way to keep 4k from working on Sony TVs.

Re: NO 4K streaming on VUDU!?!?

I like how no one from Sony has responded since asking the OP what model of Sony TV they own..... like that really matters, since the are NO Sony devices WHATSOEVER that are supported for UHD playback by Vudu.

Vudu blames Sony, Sony blames Vudu. Where does that place the customer?

Re: NO 4K streaming on VUDU!?!?

Does the new Movies Anywhere approach solve this problem?   That is, if you have connected the accounts the Amazon Video app should play your Vudu content.   And there is a new Movies Anywhere app but I don't know about its capabiliites yet.

Without disputing what you're saying, because I am honestly not sure, that makes no sense. The app is not the selling point for the TV, so there is no reason the TV manufacturer would care whether the app does anything. The app developer is the one who benefits from the app working on the TV - in this, case, providing 4K video - so the logical burden is to put it on them to develop the app for the TV. Vudu app plays 4K = I buy movies from Vudu. Sony doesn't benefit directly from that. Additionally, the app developer knows the app and needs only any specific Sony hardware specs to develop their app for Sony TVs.

It's all kind-of a moot point for me anyway, since I bought a 4K player for less than the cost of four Vudu 4K movies. Why would I pay $30 for streaming quality when I can get the same movie on a disc with a higher bitrate CHEAPER?

Re: NO 4K streaming on VUDU!?!?

Movies Anywhere is only HD at present. I don't think it delivers 4K content on any platform or for any hardware just yet, even for movies you've imported which were purchased in 4K.

As I mentioned in another comment, I bought a 4K disc player, so I will probably never open the Vudu app again. I'll probably just uninstall it, since it never did what it needed to anyway. If I want a movie in 4K, I'll buy the disc, and if I want to access my Ultraviolet, Amazon or Google Play library I'll go to Movies Anywhere.

[ Edited ]

Movies Anywhere (MA) does not support any resolution, per se. They are simply a locker that connects with iTunes, Vudu, Amazon, and Google and nothing more. What I have found is that none of the UHD titles I own on Vudu that are MA are in UHD on the other services (thankfully, in most cases, they are HD, although I have read some complaints that many titles for some people ported over to other services, including Vudu, in SD).

Re: NO 4K streaming on VUDU!?!?

I just installed a Movies Anywhere app from Google Play, but I haven't set up an account yet.   What would that TV app do if not play movies?

I'm holding off on setting up my own account to see if I can be added as a sub-account with my adult son who owns a bazillion movies, so it may be a while before I can log in myself.

Re: NO 4K streaming on VUDU!?!?

>Movies Anywhere (MA) does not support any resolution, per se. They are simply a locker that connects with iTunes, Vudu, Amazon, and Google and nothing more.

I have three movies that I bought in 4K - Ghostbusters and Fifth Element through Sony's 4K app (also playable in Vudu, but only HD) and The LEGO Batman Movie through Google Play. None of them play in 4K through MA. The Reddit sub for Movies Anywhere is full of people commenting about their movies not porting in 4K, and many people saying that MA does not support 4K. Someone wrote there this morning that they spoke with a customer service rep at MA:

>I then asked about movies porting from one service in 4K/UHD to another by way of Movies Anywhere. They said that they need to have it in their service as UHD/4K first. So I asked, if I have a movie in 4K in one service (iTunes), will the Movies Anywhere license will update from HD to 4K when they get the 4K versions? They said it will.

Indicating they are NOT a locker *per se*, but have independent licenses for each movie from other services. I have not seen ANYONE say they've successfully watched a movie in 4K on MA with *any* hardware and multiple people state unequivocally that MA is not supporting 4K at present.
