Sony Bravia XBR-55X850D: Netflix Audio

My Sony Bravia XBR-55X850D 55” class 4K HDR Ultra HD TV is connected to a Sony STR-DN840 7.2-channel 4K Wi-Fi Network A/V Receiver.

Netflix offers a 4K level of service that I wanted to try.  The Netflix app on the TV would not output its sound to the receiver via HDMI 4 (ARC).  I was able to get the video but not the audio.

I replaced the High-Speed HDMI cable to verify that it was not a cable issue, but the cable switch made no difference.

The only thing that worked for me was to install an Optical Digital Audio cable between the TV and the Receiver.

I am glad that this configuration works, but I am disappointed that the HDMI ARC does not work.

I am curious to know if others have had a similar experience.

Re: Sony Bravia XBR-55X850D: Netflix Audio

I too use an optical cable to connect to my receiver.

I have not tried the ARC HDMI approach.

However, I encounteded a different problem.

My receiver indicates that it is in Dolby PL II mode which means that the signal from the TV is simply sterio and not 5.1 surround as I expected.

What Dolby mode does your receiver show and what kind od sound do you hear? 5.1 Surround or simulated surround?

I have NETFLIX on both an AppleTV and the Bravia TV. (although not 4K in the AppleTV). 5.1 surround works in the AppleTV, but not the Bravia.

I think on several levels the Sony Bravia 4K does not handle audio properly.

Thanks.

I spent 1.5 hours with the sony voice chat people and successfully demonstrated my problem.

Here's hoping they figure out what to do.

I don't use Netflix - but can I suggest sideloading the standard Android Play store version of the apk and seeing what behaviour that produces?

Also just a note you seldom would want to use Optical audio for anything other than 2 channel PCM  - as it only supports an ancient compressed format stream that degrades the sound quality quite considerably.

Your best bet if you want surround out of the Unit is to use ARC HDMI output which can do the Lossless and Newer Dolby formats.

Re: Sony Bravia XBR-55X850D: Netflix Audio

An update to my surround issue.

I have a stereo headset always plugged into my TV so that I can listen withoud disturbing others.

Often I use the 'phones while my wife listenes to the audio systm. I can hear much better that way and the audio system sound does not need to be too loud. (I have a hearing disability).

Apparantly the insertion of the jack, causes NETFLIX to change the Dolby Digital signal sent through the optical cable to stereo. All the other sources and apps operate properly.

So my focus is turned to NETFLIX. I called them and they more or less agreed with my (and SONY's) analysis.

This may also be a factor in other ARC issues.

If any of oyu are having similar (or maybe quite different) issues with NETFLIX, why not call them or send them a note.

Re: Sony Bravia XBR-55X850D: Netflix Audio

My XBR-55900E has a settings/sound/digital audio out setting that has to be set to "auto 1" or "auto 2" to get surround sound at all, and under settings/sound/sound adjustments/advanced settings/input related there is a setting for how to output dolby digital plus.  You might need to set it to dolby digital.

XBR75900E

I cannot receive surround sound on Netflix. I have tried every setting than i can imagine. The 7.1 indication does not show on Netflix program information. Most of the posts here on this product are not very recent. Has anyone found a work-around or a solution.

Re: XBR75900E

Although I have an XBR850D I believe that the surround issue may be the same in the XBR900E.

I called NETFLIX and they more or less agree that their app decides what the audio output should be, in my case depending on whether there is someting plugged into the headphone jack of the TV.

If someting is in the headphone jack ALL the audio is output as 2.0. My sound system converts to a dumbed down simulated surround Dolby PL II.

When I want Digital Dolby I remove the jack and it works properly.

I also watch Amazon Prime Video which DOES output DD with the headphone jack in which to me confirms that it is the app that decides what the output is.

Why not contact NETFLIX, as I did, and complain (even if you do not use the headphone jack).

Also, NETFLIX may only output DD 5.1.

Good luck.
