XBR-65X930D faulty 3D

[ Edited ]

The 65X930D is experiencing heavy crosstalk just like the x850c did/does. A lot of AVSForum members with the 65 inch model are experiencing the same issue, however the 55 inch model seems to work well. Professional reviews are matching up as well. If they reviewed the 65 they mention how poor the 3D is performing. I have escalated the issue to the Sony engineers last week, however they still have not responded after two business weeks.

Also this issue occurs with both the Sony TDG-BT500A glasses and Samsung SSG-5150 glasses. Both glasses have been reported to work great on the 55 inch. I have tested six different sources to include an Xbox one, Samsung UBD-K8500, BDP-S6700, YouTube, HBO 3D from Cox and a USB with the Sony 3D demo and more. I have also tested many 3D bluray disks to include Sony Production titles (Exodus, The Martian, Hotel Transelavaion 2), all experience the same heavy crosstalk/ghosting.

Current responce from Sony:

Thank you for responding. We do apologize, we have received a note from our engineers that the 3D performance of your television cannot be improved. The TV is very dependent on the 3D content. Right now, we do not have a software or hardware that can fix the issue. Your experience though, will be forwarded to the relevant department as feedback.

24th April Update:

On my second unit. The 3D is still unwatchable. Sony has contracted me once just to gather info and didnt call me back after 48 hours, infact they didnt call me back after a full weeks. Its been three weeks no real responce or solution to my problem.

As the the X930 id a bear to box up to return or move I made a video to help out other who may be struggling with this display.

Re: XBR-65X930D faulty 3D

I also own the 65" 930D and the 3D crosstalking in the near and far is the WORST I've ever seen, making some 3D movies totally unwatchable (Prometheus, for example, early in the movie when a character walks out of the cave, look at the mountains in the distance, by far the worse crosstalk I've ever seen).  I tried using a Samsung 8500 4K player, and a Sony S790 player (slightly better than the Samsung player, but still unacceptable).

Re: XBR-65X930D faulty 3D

Hello there,

I am also owner of a 65X9300D which is the Chinese model of the 65X930D. I have a hard time here in Beijing with Sony support to make them correct the same problem other people have or had with 65X850C.

The TV model has been released since 2 weeks and despite a couple of non related firmware upgrade the 3D is absolutely awful.

Crosstalk is impossible to adjust for every elements on screen at the same time.

I have a huge collection of imported US 3D Blu-Ray and none I've tried work properly even a perfect release like the original Jurrasic Park 3D.

I can compare them on my 2010 first generation Sony 3D TV where they look so sharp and clear without crosstalk. I just can't understand how they could have released a product so bad worldwide after being the main company to push 3D so hard since 6 years.

So far I've tested 3 differents unit of this model and the problem is identical on all of them.

It seems now they've fixed the problem on 65X850C, they should be able I guess to simply copy and paste the proper code they changed in the firmware to get the X930D series (which is this year flagship) 3D working.

I wonder who is responsible of releasing firmware core updates on a global scale (not talking about Android market specific apps), US engineers, Japanese or can Chinese enginneers solve this on their own ?

I am glad we finally have a thread open for this series so we can try to identify if there are even more different models with the exact same problem and help Sony to get them all fixed at once (including different screen sizes).

If there is nothing done quickly, should we threaten to play dumb and all post bad comments on reviews sites (which are actually very good for the X930D and warn people not to buy this model or it's equivalent) and online seller including Sony own shops ? I could do this in French (I'm an expat here), Chinese and English.

Because it is now obviously a global problem on all markets.

I don't see myself being patient for 6 month hoping this would be fixed like they did on X850C. I'm a huge fan of 3D Blu-Rays since day 1 and this is a disaster for me so far.

i also own the Sony 930D and have to admit the 3D on this tv is practically unwatchable. i have tried 3 different 3D movies and the crosstalk is the worst i have ever seen. What happened to the QA department at the factory? Didnt anyone at SONY test these sets?

Re: XBR-65X930D faulty 3D

[ Edited ]

I've been attempting to get a response from Sony support and it has been awful. Last Wednesday Apirl 6th my case was elevated to the engineer level. I was told by level 2 that I would get a response in 24 hours. Everyday late in the afternoon I called to check up on my case and was told in 24 hour I will be receiving a response. It's been a total of 180 hours or 6 business days with no response. Every professional review of the 65 inch mentions the 3D as being bad. Members of the largest AV forums AVSforums are talking about the broken 3D. Even Rtings mentioned the 3D is terrible on the 65 but works great on the 55. The word is out.

There are alot of great HDR displays on the market, but Sony is the only non IPS/OLED on the market that has 3D. A lot of people want both HDR and 3D and the x930d has both, however if the 3D is broken why spend the premium on 3D when you can get an amazing HDR set like the VIZIO P65-C1 for $1500 less that get is getting amazing review and truly is a revolutionary display. There is no reason to spend premium prices for a set where one of the main features is broken. I'm not waiting six months like the x850c owners had too.

Re: XBR-65X930D faulty 3D

Here the review I've posted on Amazon.com

It has not been validated yet and probably won't be but trust me guys, instead of loosing useless hours with the support service, let's hit them where they will feel some pain and start to respect our absolutely legitimate request. I invite you all to write similar comments on amazon.com amazon.co.uk amazon.fr sony.com and any other site possible reviewing and selling this TV.

Then they would have serious pressure from their distributors.

WARNING ! Unacceptable AWFUL 3D Crosstalk

I am owner of this TV and potential buyers have to be aware they should for now not invested so much money if they're interested in watching 3D content.
Keep in mind Sony has been the main company to push 3D since 2010, there are still plenty of great quality 3D Blu-ray released every month.

The crosstalk (or ghosting) here is extreme on EVERY unit of X930D worldwide (I actually have the Chinese model), nothing can be set properly using the depth parameter, you can hardly fix only one element at a time (for example only menu or subtitle, or only closest objects on screen, middle range, deep, deeper etc...). I have exchanged mine 3 times already and the result if the same.

I can assure everybody it is not a problem of player, cable, glasses, or source whatsoever.
I am a huge 3D fan and have  60 original 3D Blu-rays, which look marvelous on my 1st generation Sony 3D TV. I know what I'm talking about.

This problem has received a lot of complains for last years X850C model and after 6 months of users struggling with Sony Support, they finally admitted and fixed it via firmware update for the 65" but did not for the 55" and 75" sizes.

It seems Sony doesn't want to admit this set also has a disgusting 3D rendering like they kept the firmware in Alpha version.

Please those who already bought the X930D, report your experience on review sites comments and especially on Sony Community Official forum here :

Once the problem will be fixed I will reedit or delete this comment.
This is a shame because to be honest this TV is absolutely AMAZING otherwise.

I also asked a question on the amazon.com page, it apparently needs to be validated too to appear on site but, guys please do the same

How come the 3D crosstalk is so AWFUL and nothing is done to get it fixed yet. Amazon.com try by yourself with any good 3D Blu-Ray and report to Sony

Re: XBR-65X930D faulty 3D

I haven't found a way to write a review on Sony.com X930D page. No one has yet but there's plenty for the X930C.

This is even more frustrating to see some users so amazed by the quality of the 3D on this set (at least 75", it's possible the 65" suffers the same problem).

Have you been able to contact Sony and notified them of your 3D issue yet? I know they somewhat monitor this community page, but try and go through official channel first before diving off the deepend. I don’t disagree that we should warn other buyers about the 3D, but being vengeful isn’t going to speed the process up.

Looking at the X850C thread, the owners are and have already contacted the BBB over the fact Sony told some owners they will not be fixing the other size models. Sony has enough issues with competitions coming from others besides Samsung and LG, now  that Vizio, Hisence and TCL are all selling premium thin FALD sets for much less. It behooves Sony to fix this issue fast if they want to stay competitive in this market. Sony has a lot of market share to lose. Sony needs to get their act together fast.

Re: XBR-65X930D faulty 3D

Yes I have contacted Sony here in Beijing China 3 weeks ago, a technician came to my home and tried with different 3D Blu-Ray, acknowledge the problem and then issued a paper to let me exchange the unit thinking it was just a bad TV set.

When the new unit arrived, it had exactly the same problem. I called them again, I had to re-explain every time, loose a lot of time and energy and all that for nothing.

I went to a dealer and tried myself, same...

This is a worldwide problem they have and they have to fix this at the top of the chain of enginers.

I am not sure if Sony USA actually is in charge of programming the firmware or if it is based in Sony Japan. But I guess when they correct some bug, it is included in all the variations of the product in other markets despite there are specific local third party application (content providers or whatever casual game you can download, we don't have Netflix or Hulu or actually even Google Play here).

So please understand me well, I am a Sony Fan, I have always bought their products and want to help there. But when I saw on the other thread some technicians told 75X805C and 55X805C there won't be a fix for those sizes, I thought it could also mean there won't ever be one for 65X930D or mine 65X9300D.

They want to have a dumb attitude and being forced to act, let's use the only tool we have, reviews...

The technician here in China wants to come again to my home to test with their 'own' 3D source. I'm sure he wants to try to help but will just waste my time again. They have to communicate with the engineer team directly wherever he is on this planet, US, Japan or China, India ? I don't know how they delocalized.

But how can I let them understand that ? The support center always have to go through scripted procedures, even when some of you in the US are allowed to speak to a Technician level 2 or whatever, how can we know the information really goes where it needds if nobody is responsible for that.

They will always have to let you try with different glasses, cable, player, disc...

Either they read this thread and start to think, we have a problem here or they will start to hear from their marketing departement saying : "What have you done guys ? We get awful reviews and feedback on amazon.com, do your job like you are supposed to and fix this ASAP, this is a shame for a company like ours !"
