Multi Camera Control of AS100 & AS30 using Playmemories Mobile phone app

Hi all,

For a long time I was avoiding buying the silly remote for the action cameras beacause I knew the phone could (technologically) do the same thing and I wasn't happy about waisting $$$. So when sony came out with the app update to the Playmemories App I was livid they excluded the older cameras from this. But not to be detered - where there is a will there is a way.

When the remote first came out I went to a sony store and figured out how it worked for multi camera control:

The remote creates a wireless network called DIRECT-ZTL0:RM-LVR1 the way the camera joins the network is via WPS. (via menus for Multi Camera control) Now all that was left was wait for Android hotspot to get upgraded so it supports WPS (although it will probably work if you use your home router and WPS on that & then transfer the setting [wireless network name and password] to your phone / ipad etc... especially since the iphone / ipad hotspot doesnt do WPS)

Once the new Playmemories app came out I connected the cameras to my phone hotspot using WPS and opened the playmemories mobile app and lo and behold everything work perfectly.

Enjoy the video guide: https://youtu.be/aAy_DQyFkro

Oh and I take GREAT joy in knowing that sony can't take this feature away without a major rewrite of the playmemories app &/or a firmware upgrade to the camera [even then they risk breaking the live view remote connection Smiley Very Happy). In case they try I would save the current version of the .APK if I were you.

Re: Multi Camera Control of AS100 & AS30 using Playmemories Mobile phone app

Hi yeogoshin,

Do you have a copy of Sony Playmemories APK file for me to download, my apps just don't show the multiple cameras after connecting with the hotspot using WPS.  After I saw my 2 AS100 connection, I run the apps and it just show no connection.

While my other Android device (Samsung Note & S3) does not have WPS connect under the "Tethering and portable hotspot", is there any other option to connect the the cameras?

Thanks.

What version is your playmemories mobile app? Installed on the phone.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sony.playmemories.mobile

Yes if there is no WPS on the phone under the settings do the following:

1) Create a wireless network on any device(home router, phone etc...) that has WPS available. Write down the network Name and Password.

2) Connect all the cameras to that wireless network using the WPS method. After they connect turn them off

3) Turn off the wireless network on that device (router phone etc...)

4) Input the same wireless network settings (name & password) into your phone Samsung Note or S3 and turn on the hotspot.

5) Turn on the cameras and they will join your phones (Note, S3) network.

6) Open playmemories app.

(I have just tested this to work on the Galaxy Nexus - which did not have an option for WPS)

The cameras MUST be connected directly to the phone wifi network, running playmemories app. You can not have a separate hotspot or home wireless router and have both the phone and cameras connected to it.

This also works for the AZ1.  I have an iPhone and the iPhone does not have WPS, so I used my home router which has WPS using instructions provided here.  in the AZ1 you have to select the multi-camera mode then hold the wifi button until you here the beeping which indicates its trying to connect.  once connected.  you should be able to proceed to the instructions provided here...

For the AZ1 specifically - Only one caveat.  Unless someone knows how to get the WPA password used for the LVR2 (you'd set your smartphone hotspot to the same ssid and password as the LVR2), if you have a LVR2 (Live View Remote), you'll have to re-pair it with that if you want to use with the remote.  It appears the AZ1 can only remember one connection while the AS200v can retain the connection with my phone and LVR2 in mulit camera mode.

Thanks!

Re: Multi Camera Control of AS100 & AS30 using Playmemories Mobile phone app

Hello Yegoshin, I have tried your step-by-step instructions but it just doesn't work with my AS30V. I select "new" under Multi wifi conection but the link between the MiFi and the action cam never happens. I've searched for troubleshooting but I can't find any clue and/or solution. Do you know if there is something I could do so it works?

Hi,

Can you tell me the make/model of the phone and MiFi you are trying to use?

Except the AS30 he is trying to connect (and other older cameras) doesn't have the option to input network information under PlayMemories Mobile App, there is no Multi Camera Control Setting under the menus...

Phone - PlayMemories App - Menu - Multi Camera Control Setting - Next

    • SSID - Name of your Personal HotSpot (e.g. “Steve’s iPhone”)
    • Authentication Method - WPA2 PSK
    • Password - Your Personal HotSpot Password (e.g. “Frog******OnMars”)

The only way to do it is by tricking the camera to think its connecting to a remote using WPS.
