Sony FDR-X3000: 2560 x 1440 60p 100 Mbps

Dear Community,

I just purchased the Sony FDR-X3000 and I am really amazed. This is the best action cam by far!

But: The 1440p resolution is missing. If you want 60 fps, you have to reduce the resolution to 1080p with a video recording rate of 50 Mbps.

Wouldn't it be possible to give us 1440p with 60 fps and a video recording rate of 100 Mbps?

The image quality should be better than with 1080p while we keep the advantages of 60 fps.

I wish I could capture with 1440p and sacrifice the extra resolution for further stabilization, while using 60 fps for smooth footage and the possibility to slow down the video.

Please give us the best possible image quality with 60 fps.

What do you think?

Thanks! Smiley Happy

Re: Sony FDR-X3000: 2560 x 1440 60p 100 Mbps

Many people have said this to me.

"2K" would be brilliant because most video (which you actually want to host somewhere, so others can watch it) is rendered to 1080P, and starting with 2K would allow lens correction and other transformations without replicating pixels.

Also 2K plays on most modern computers whereas 4K needs a really top-end machine - unless the bitrate has been crippled to something ridiculous like 30-50mbps and then why bother with 4K?

Re: Sony FDR-X3000: 2560 x 1440 60p 100 Mbps

I wrote "won't happen" for two reasons:

1. Sony has never added features to their Action Cam models via firmware after they got released.

2. If I informed myself correctly - XAVC-S does not support resolutions between 2160p and 1080p. Therefore it is technically not possible to achieve on this camera anyways.

I am quite certain the next SAC will feature 4K 60fps at a usable bitrate (150Mbps) which would give you the option to export a 0.5 speed slow motion at 75Mbit/s as well as the option to reframe the shot with up to 200% zoom at 37.5Mbit/s without losing image information.

If point 1. applies then this discussion is academic but I am certain the X3000 could do 2K, because

- it can do mp4 in various sizes, and mp4 at the right bitrate is just as good as xavcs or whatever they call these codecs

- the x3000 does use a subset of the sensor when doing software stabilisation

FYI point 2 definetly applies.

Why it wouldn't work with MP4?

The processor is too weak for that, since default MP4 needs more calculations to be encrypted.

Therefore unless Sony developes a new encoding method and gets it to work on the X3000, you won't see 2K on this camera.

Re: Sony FDR-X3000: 2560 x 1440 60p 100 Mbps

Thanks for all the answers!

Why does Sony provide this community, if that's the case?
If it would be Sony's policy to withhold feature updates to push the next product, I would think twice before purchasing another Sony product.

I just hope, Sony didn't think too much about 1440p when developing this action cam. It's either 4K or 1080p or lower.
Maybe it's an easy thing to implement the intermediate resolution. I don't see, why this would be a problem.

If someone already owns this action cam, not getting 1440p as an update wouldn't make it more likely to sell him the new Sony. He will buy it if he wants 4K @ 60 fps, no matter if he already has 1440p or not. Otherwise he would stay with the FDR-X3000 anyway. I doubt that anyone would upgrade from this cam to a new Sony for 1440p @ 60 fps. So why don't give it to the dear customers? Smiley Wink

What about this request: Give us manually adjustable shutter speed, so we can minimize motion blur when capturing with 4K @ 30 fps. Would this even help?

Re: Sony FDR-X3000: 2560 x 1440 60p 100 Mbps

You bought a product knowing it doesn't have the feature and now you demand that said feature gets added, just for the sole reason that other cameras have this mode?

I don't know of any Sony camera filming in this resolution, since again - the XAVC-S codec does not support it.

Even the next Action Cam won't have this mode.

Also I am sure you are mixing up the support forums post (which this is) and the "Join the inspiration" post which you also created.

This forum is for support if you have problems with using your camera, while "Join the inspiration" is for suggesting improvements for current and future products.

Uhm, where do you see me demanding this feature?

And why do you think I want this feature because other cams have it?

It's just a suggestion and I want to know, what other think about it.

Calm down, I also hate Mondays. Smiley Wink

"If it would be Sony's policy to withhold feature updates to push the next product, I would think twice before purchasing another Sony product."

That sounds like a demand to me.
