A7/A7R Light leaks

[ Edited ]

People in these two groups have found a light leaking issue that occurs from the mount on camera.

Here is a photo of the light leak. I did a simple test putting the lens cap on and shot at iso 25600 for 20 seconds in low indoor lighting. Light Leak

A Person in both groups took a long real world exposure and the light leaks did affect the outcome of his photograph. Real World Light Leak

Looking at the two photos together the light leaks look like they are coming from the same points. More people have confirmed this in the groups. Also the same person that took the photo above found that the e mount is squishy. He also has seemed to have found a temporary solution

"So I am now more convinced than ever that the source of the major light leak, the crescent leak showing up on the upper right quadrant of the image, is caused by that slight gap between the silver flange and the resin substrate. To get rid of it, all I needed to do was apply a very thin strip of gaffer's tape to the gap between the silver flange and the orange ring (see pic). Note that this isn't covering the space between the orange ring and the body nor is it really providing a good shield between the flange and the rear of the lens. It's just covering the gap between the flange and the orange ring, and that takes care of the crescent light leak "

Tape on the mount

The tape idea was found on twitter http://twitpic.com/dpocow

Re: A7/A7R Light leaks

Hi Geo,

As the owner of two A7R's, this is very concerning. I tested mine and I have the same issue.  I had four of my friends test theirs as well....they also had the same problem.  I made two calls today and talked to Sony reps about this issue.  They seemed unconcerned which was shocking!  Can we be kept up to date with the progress of this issue here, or another site?

No, I was not given a reference number.  I wouldn't think that you would be getting many calls because most people don't shoot long exposures, and this is where the design flaw is most noticable.  Have you tested this problem yourself?  LE's are what I shoot 95% of the time so this design error has stopped me dead in my tracks.  I sold my Canon 1DX and bough the A7R. Now I am in a situation where it is too late to return the Sony and the Sony reps that I spoke with aren't even concerned about the problem.

Re: A7/A7R Light leaks

At the moment I only have access to two A7s I did test it and was not able to replicate this issue. We are waiting for A7R samples. I can only ask you to wait for the results or if your looking for an immediate solution you can call us at 800-222-7669 (if your in the US) and please make sure you get a reference number so your call can be escalated to the correct department.

Re: A7/A7R Light leaks

I called tech support again this morning and they told me that they have received more calls about the light leak issue with the A7R and already have their engineers working on it. This was good news to me beause when I first started calling, they said that I was the only one reporting this issue.

Re: A7/A7R Light leaks

I bought both A7 and A7R at BH Photo. Both have light leaking and lens flare issues. see some sample photos below. i did tests on both A7+FE35 and A7R+FE55.
