Problem With Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens

I've been having this problem for a while now, every time I turn on the camera (Sony a5000) with the 16-50mm lens, the lens will just extend and retract endlessly with the lens shutter opening and closing. The extending and retracting stops after 5 seconds or so and I'm displayed the error message "Lens not recognized. Please reattach lens." I've also noticed an unevenness in the lens when it is fully retracted; one side of the lens is higher than the other side. I've already tried resetting the camera's settings and cleaning the contacts. My camera body is working fine because I used another lens and it worked flawlessly. Here is a recorded video of the camera demostrating my problem. Feel free to leave any feedback on what the problem might be and how I can fix it.

Is it too late to return it for a refund or exchange?

Unfortunately, yes. But it is under warranty though, so that is for last resort if I can't fix this myself.

It sounds like something that the typical Sony warranty won't cover. Did you buy it with a credit card that provides you with additional protection? Did you buy a suplimental warranty?

Re: Problem With Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens

Hi,

From what you've described about the error and the unevenness of the lens, I would say that the lens would need service. I recommend sending the lens in to one of our Authorized Service Centers.

Sent a PM on where you can send the camera to.

Re: Problem With Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens

Hi everyone,

I know it's been a while but I have the same problem with the same lens. However nothing looks unusual on the lens...

What should I do?

Cheers

Re: Problem With Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens

yes this is common problem with the 16-50mm lense. Sony really dropped the ball on this one. I've had this lense repaired twice, once under warranty the other was out of warranty. Now i have the same issue 3 years later. This lense is junk, If anyone is considering the A6000's series camera, i recommend the cameras. But steer clear of the kit 16-50mm lense. Its horrible.

If your lense is under warranty Sony will repair, but if its out of warranty you'll be on the hook for the repair bill. My advise is get rid of this lense
