A6500 Lens Queries - Sony FE 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS LensMFR # SEL24240

[ Edited ]

Is the combination of a Sony A6500 and a FE 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens a reasonable choice for shooting high school hockey and soccer games?

I really don’t want to spend more than $1,000 on a lens.

Will the Sony FE 24-240mm work well if I want to take video of the games too? I often switch back and forth between video and still.

Will the lens, in conjunction with the A6500, work to get decent action shots inside a hockey rink? If the lens is zoomed out and the f-stop high, will I still be able to take quality action photos?

Are there other lenses that I should consider?  Perhaps the  Sony E PZ 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens?

Thanks!

E-Mount lens pickings are slim.

As for the 24-240/3.5-6.3, the maximum focal length of 240 mm will be too short for most shooting opportunities for outdoor sports, even if you can be right next to the playing field, and the maximum aperture of f/6.3 is too dim for indoor sports. As a result, it won't be very good for anything you want to do.

Indoor sports is the most demanding thing you'll ever shoot. You need a large aperture lens in order to capture enough light so you can use fast shutter speeds to avoid motion blur due to subject movement, and lower ISO settings to avoid image noise. Only sports venues with television contracts have enough light for that.

For hockey, I'd say your best bet would be the $2,600 FE 70-200 mm F2.8 GM OSS, though you may be able to get away with the $1,500 FE 70-200 mm F4 G OSS. For soccer, I'd recommend the $1,200 FE 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G OSS, especially if you can only shoot from the stands.

These lenses are all available at LensRentals, so you can try them before you buy anything.

What do you want to shoot?

BTW, you would get more interest and responses if you started your own conversation instead of piggybacking your query on another.
