Re: "Warning you are in NTSC Mode" wtf?

Gordon Laing of Camera Labs to his credit mentions this annoyance in his just completed review of the A6300 but he is the only reviewer to do so.  One wonders if this is because of incompetence on the part of all the other reviewers or because to mention a negative like this might remove them from the Sony fully-funded junket to exotic places. Your guess is as good as mine.

Re: "Warning you are in NTSC Mode" wtf?

Most of them probably have NTSC units. Simple as that

Yes, NTSC models that are NTSC/PAL switchable.  Not so simple eh!

Brian Smith who is a Sony Artisan (read promotor of Sony products probably paid one way or another by Sony) says on his website:

'North Americans Can Finally Choose NTSC or PAL

The rest of the world could always do this. But now North American Sony a7RII cameras can FINALLY switch between NTSC and PAL movie recording modes. All I can say is, “About time!”'

It is quite possible that when an NTSC model is switched to PAL there is no nag message.  I don't know.  Even if a nag message is displayed as on the PAL model he would not mention that on his web page as that is one huge Sony promo, at least that's my opinion.

Well I've asked Brian if he can clarify that point for us.

I have an NTSC unit and unfortunately the same warning appears when using the PAL mode.  HIGHLY annoying as I work predominantly in PAL.

Another irritated Sony customer.

Re: "Warning you are in NTSC Mode" wtf?

Just purchased an a6300 in europe. Hadn't heard about this at all, and I'm very dissapointed. Sad to hear this affects multiple cameras over at least a year??

How is this possible? No answer from the engineering team? Though I doubt they have much to do with this decision.

And how on earth is 24fps an NTSC thing? It's been used in films in europe as well you know.

I still have hope sony will fix this, hopefully ASAP. It's ridiculous we customers have to keep asking for this for so long.

Re: "Warning you are in NTSC Mode" wtf?

Based on more information in other forums I believe this nag message is a marketing decision and is aimed primarily at the large USA market. Apparently it is possible to purchase a grey market product, presumably in Asia and presumably PAL, for significantly less money. When such a product is set to (USA) NTSC the forever nag message is in your fact, as we know all too well.

The fact that for people like me who purchased a retail product here in a PAL country and want to shoot 30p 4k and not 25p 4k - there is a difference - I'm up the creek.

Perhaps this is an unintended consequence of the big market decision - how few such crippled Sony camers will be sold in New Zealand anyway - and something we just have to live with.

The good news is that the time constraint has been hacked and my bet is that soon this nag message will get the same treatment. See sonyalpharumors.

Oh yes, Sony support finally did contact me and informed me the reason for the nag is that Sony recommends shooting PAL in a PAL country.  Pathetic, as expected.
