Re: star-eater algorithm in Bulb-mode shots - please offer alternative

If anyone in the Sony software engineering team is reading this thread and wondering what solution we want:

In the menu:

Noise reduction:

→Advanced Noise Reduction

→Long Exposure Only

→OFF

Advanced can include Spatial Filtering and Dark Frame Subtraction.

Long Exposure Only is just a darkframe on exposures >1s

OFF is what it says, no spatial filtering, no darkframe, no trickery.

I have just gotten off the phone with a representative of Sony technical support line. Concerning the star eater problem with Sony cameras. Since I have the original modelsSmiley Frustratedony A7R and A7S, I asked if they were aware of this problem when using Bulb (B). She claimed that there is no problem at all with these models, “including bulb.” However, she said Sony was aware of and working on the known problem with A7RM2 and A7SM2. She documented my call and gave me a case number, even so.

Well it looks as if more and more noise is being made about it which is good!, we just need to keep it up

It's also been a known problem here on Sony Community for quite a while now:

That thread started 2 years ago!

Re: star-eater algorithm in Bulb-mode shots - please offer alternative

Yes, but now with A7RM2 and A7SM2 models this star eater algorithm is even more bad, because it kicks in 4sec and longer exposures, not even BULB required!! Imagine!

Come on Sony, please sort this star eating algorithm out! I'm doing a Masters degree in Photography showing the effects of light pollution to our dark skies. I can no longer get the same results due to this ****** firmware upgrade and my long days/weeks I have put into this project are wasted!

Aaargh!! #¤%#& ...Still nothing from Sony??!!

C'mon. We need that firmware update to "star eater" v. 3.30!!!

What the h*ll we have to do now?

...Just continue with this frustrating racket?

...Or maybe just sell our Sony gears and buy Canon or Nikon or Pentax or Fuji...All of these do long exposures better than Sony, no star eating!

...And at least not recommend Sony to anyone!
