Re: star-eater algorithm in Bulb-mode shots - please offer alternative

It'll be months if not a year before we have a solution. That's assuming we get one at all.
They're probably just saying that It's important and they’re working on it until all the noise dies down.

Remember how long it took to get uncompressed RAW? Sony bodies still don't do LOSSLESS compressed RAW like every other brand do.

Pentax K-1 is the king of the hill for unmodified astro bodies now.

Re: star-eater algorithm in Bulb-mode shots - please offer alternative

Canon is pretty well established in astrophoto community with both a dedicated body and software support. Nikon has been stepping up their game too. It's really odd and depressing that Sony is claiming to be king of high ISO/ shooting in the dark and yet they completely drop the ball on astrophotography. The fix is software too - not THAT hard. They could have a technical AND customer relations win here if they come through

It's dumbfounding isn't it.
Because they are such an insular and silo-like company the customer service team will be pulling their hair out but have no way to influence the engineering or managerial people capable of making these changes.

Face it, there will never be anything from Sony,They provided their canned "we care" statement early on.

The best we can hope for is that this is corrected in future models

Anybody interested in joining this livestream event about the a9?  It might be a good opportunity to find out if they're including the star eater algorithm on the new line of cameras, too...

If enough Sony engineers or higher-ups are contacted about the concerns of the astrophotographer community, I'm sure they would take it seriously. More than likely Sony is working on the problem, but apparently not fast enough. Surely they will resolve the concerns of the community.

[ Edited ]

honestly, i won't believe sony is doing anything until i see an official word by sony on large audience website -or better an actual firmware release correcting the issue

star eater has been known for years on marks 1, and they have put it at 4 SECONDS on firmware upgrade...

i will do a nightscape comparison of my old 350D (which is currently worth less than $100) vs my $3k a7s2 this weekend. but i already know the result...

it will just be another weekend far from the city lights lost...

SONY, I AM LOSING MY TIME AND MONEY WITH MY USELESS A7S2 SINCE YOUR FIRMWARE UPGRADE

Yep, this has become quite a nightmare!

We're like locked in an empty room, and no one hears...That we want to go out - of this problem . Not even ****** Sony listen! Frustrating, very frustrating. Sony is begging for trouble. This will be remembered for a long time....

Re: star-eater algorithm in Bulb-mode shots - please offer alternative

The issue has occurred since FW 2.0 on the A7RII. 3.2s is fine, 4.0s is smoothed out by spatial filtering.

This was confirmed by photographer Matt Grum:
