Blu-ray disc won't play on Blu-ray player

[ Edited ]

If you are having problems playing a blu-ray disc is your blu-ray player, try the following.

1) Check the firmware-make sure you have the latest version.  If your BD player uses the Xross media bar, following these steps:

Press the Home button.

Select setup

Select System Settings

Press the Enter button on the remote.

Scroll down and select System Information and press enter.

The Firmware version will appear on the screen. Write this number down and go to esupport.sony.com to see if you have the latest version. Just follow the instruction to perform the update.  Check out this video.....it will walk you thru the steps I just described.

2) If your BD player doesn't have internet connection, you can check the firmware version by:

Press the System Menu button.

Highlight Setup and press the ENTER button.

Highlight Video Setup press the ENTER button

Highlight TV Type and press the ENTER button

On the remote, press the Blue button

The current firmware version of the player will display. Write this number down and go to esupport.sony.com to see if you have the latest version. Just follow the instruction to perform the update.  Check out this video.....it will walk you thru the steps I just described.

3) Some BD players requre that a USB memory device is inserted in the EXT slot of the player prior to playing the movie. It's recommended to use at least 1GB. If you already are using one and run into a disc not playing, try removing the USB device and plugging it back in.

Here's a few more things you can try.

1. Reset the BD Player:

  • Remove the disc from the BD player.
  • Turn off the BD player.
  • Unplug the power cord of the BD player from the electrical outlet.
  • Let the player remain without power for one minute.
  • Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet.
  • Turn on the BD player.
  • Insert the disc into the BD player

2. Make sure that the Parental Control settings are not set to "On".

3. If the BD player supports the BD-Live feature, set the BD Internet Connection setting to "Do Not Allow" and delete any conflicting BD-Live date from the BD/DVD Viewing Settings menu

Re: Blu-ray dics won't play on Blu-ray player

I have the problem mentioned above on my new BDP-S390 (2 months old).

I checked the firmware (update via Internet reports it is up to date) and have no USB key inserted.

It won't play discs that it played only a few days ago.

In one case it displays the initial language menu but on selecting a language we get no further.

It does connect to Gracenote and correctly retrieves the BD information.

It plays DVDs without problem as well as content from the Internet.

Is there anything else to try before returning it to the shop for repair?

Re: Blu-ray dics won't play on Blu-ray player

gosdest,

Here's a few more things you can try.

1. Make sure that the Parental Control settings are not set to "On".

2. If the BD player supports the BD-Live feature, set the BD Internet Connection setting to "Do Not Allow" and delete any conflicting BD-Live date from the BD/DVD Viewing Settings menu

3. Final resort....you can reset the BD Player:

  • Remove the disc from the BD player.
  • Turn off the BD player.
  • Unplug the power cord of the BD player from the electrical outlet.
  • Let the player remain without power for one minute.
  • Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet.
  • Turn on the BD player.
  • Insert the disc into the BD player

Let me know if any of these work for you!  Thanks!

Re: Blu-ray dics won't play on Blu-ray player

Thanks!

I'll check these and let you know.

I was going to try unplugging anyway as I know that for a PC this is sometimes what is needed.

(I've already tried resetting everything to factory defaults without any success.)

Re: Blu-ray dics won't play on Blu-ray player

I was pretty sure that I had already tried suggestins 1 and 2 so I went straight for number 3.

To my great surprise, it worked!

The player now plays Blu-ray discs again! And even though it was a "final resort" none of my settings were lost. So perhaps it should be the "first resort".

I think this trick should be mentioned in the user manual, don't you? :smileyhappy:

Awesome!  And yes, I agree with you....it should be in the manual!  I will forward your suggestion about the manual to the proper dept. within Sony. I'm also going to edit the original post to include those steps as well. Thanks!

Re: Blu-ray dics won't play on Blu-ray player

Useless info, still doesn't work. A year ago my "blu-ray" player stopped playing newer blu-ray discs, now it won't play the newest Disney DVDs.

Re: Blu-ray dics won't play on Blu-ray player

I'm sorry you are still having problems after trying all the troubleshooting steps. Could you provide me with the names of the Disney DVD's you are having a problem with? Are these purchased DVD's or rentals? I'd like to forward this information to our engineering department for further research.

 Thanks!

Re: Blu-ray dics won't play on Blu-ray player

Disney DVD: Frankenweenie does not play; Nightmare before Christmas plays just fine.

Blu-Ray: BBC Human Planet does not play; Blu-rays I purchased / rented prior to 12/2012 play just fine.
