BDPS 3100 will not connect to wireless network with D-Link DIR 655 router

Having problems connecting device to wireless network.  Laptops and smartphones all show strong signal and work well with no problems in same physical location as tv and DVD device.  Although DVD device recognizes SSID, it shows 0% signal strength on connection status.  I have tried manual set up for IP address with correct WPA password and settings.

Could the problem be the router ,which was purchased in 2010?

One of the reasons I purchased this DVD player was that reviews said it was easy to connect to wireless network.  So, what's happening?
