Netflix streaming constantly freezes and times out

I bought 2 Sony bdp-s185 blu-ray players about 8 months ago, for the primary purpose of streaming netflix on my tvs.  I wanted to replace my XBox as the primary streaming device.  They have been working pretty good up until about a month ago.  Now, I can't watch anything on them without constant freezing and time outs.  After restarting the stream multiple times, if I am lucky I can get it to actually play something, but it will not stream anything in HD.  I can't get a streaming speed more than 0.3 Mbps on the devices.

It is not a problem with my internet connection or netflix.  I have a solid 25mbps connection and have already called my cable company to see if there are any problems with the connection.  I can get a flawless stream on my computer while at the exact same time these devices are struggling to even play anything.  I only purchased these players for netflix, and I am not interested in watching blu-rays or anything else, so right now these devices are worthless to me.

Re: Netflix streaming constantly freezes and times out

It would appear this is not an isolated issue and is related specifically to Netflix on Sony players., NOT to my internet connection. I have a samsung blueray player that deals with Netflix just fine, as does my Samsung smart TV and all other devices I own (Android phone, android tablet, etc)..

I have my Sony Bluray set up with a wired connection with very good speed. It works flawlessly with Amazon and other streaming services, but with Netflix, it buffers constantly. This HAS to be an issue on Sony's end.

This is not an issue with my internet connection and due to the fact that other streaming services work on my Sony Bluray player, it seems apparent tihs has to do with Sony's version of th enetflix software, or how Sony streams netflix specifically.

Please advise. I have read all articles posted as "solutions" and they are not the issue.

Sounds very similar to the problem with NHL Game Center. Does that work for you? Netflix actually works for me.

Re: Netflix streaming constantly freezes and times out

See my post under netflix streaming issue with bdp s390 on page 5. Nutshell is they changed my DNS numbers from Google/Google to Verizon/Google and said it should resolve, gave case number and said goodbye. Have been getting slghtly better performance, not been shut down yet, but doubt this is the final fix.

And still heard nothing from moderator Brian P.

Re: Netflix streaming constantly freezes and times out

I'm also struggling to get netflix streaming nicely and have reviewed a lot of the threads similar with no success.

Here are my details please help me with any advice you can give.

Sony BDP 570 - Up to date firmware.  Hard wired to my wireless router that is hard wired to my cable modem.

Internet connection is concast 20GB, very nice speed, no issues to date.

I have used the namebench software to identify my best DNS servers and set them up in my routers as primary, secondary and tertiary.

I have also added these DNS servers into the Blu Ray as primary and secondary to see if it helps.

My netgear wireless router is up to date with firmware.  I am not experiencing any issues with netflix applications on my ipad or my lapptops, each of these uses a wireless connection yet seem to stream very nicely.

When I use netflix app on my bluray I see the following

Checking link speed.  This initial screen takes about 30 seconds to complete.  Then after this another checking link speed shows up which completes much faster.

Then it takes a long time for the initial buffering to complete.  After this my movies will start but it constantly stops and rebuffers.  The only way to even sort of make this useful is to immediately pause the movei for about 10 minutes to allow buffering then watch.  This still needs to be repeated every 10 minutes or so.  Pretty much useless.

So, I am hardwired to my high speed connection and still facing issues.  Other devices on wirelss have no difficulty with netflix.  My blu ray is my only netflix enabled device surrenty usable on my HDTV.  Any advice?

I've seen mention that sny netlix connections pass through sony servers first before getting to the netflix backend servers.  Is this true and if so is this the bottleneck?  Are there other things I can adjust that may help here?

Thanks,

Dave

No good advice, sorry.

I finally have given up and just put my non Sony notebook by the entertainment center and use it when the Sony blu ray balks. (And am in the market for a non Sony blu ray, but will take it slow)

As to the Sony server issue, the most knowledgeable person with Sony I spoke to said that my model, 2011, and before were "authenticating" thru Sony and newer models were not. Did say she had no ability to contact the Sony server managers to verify or check.

Irregardless of the technical issue, one thing I know is that while my Sony blu ray chokes, my Samsung tablet and my notebook, in the same vicinity as the blu ray, flat out scream. So as far as I am concerned, this is a Sony issue, not me, not netflix, but Sony. And I hope it comes back to bite them due to their inability to resolve or explain it. Needless to say, I will be adding my evaluations to Sony products on Amazon and Newegg as I shop for my next player. May not make much or a difference in Sony attitude or sales, but it will at least make me feel like I am punching back a bit.

==========================================================

FOLLOW-UP NOTE: My complaint was eventually resolved by Sony based on my forum posts when they called me and told me they would ship me a newer model replacement in exchange for my player that was having problems.  This post was marked by "Anonymous" as an accepted solution. I have no idea who "Anonymous" is, and they would not have know how Sony resolved my issue. BUT MY ISSUE IS NOW RESOLVED WITH THE NEW PLAYER!  DON'T KNOW WHY THAT IS NOT DONE FOR MORE FOLKS.

Sony, how about supporting these machines by providing some decent firmware?  I unfortunately purchased 6 of these Sony Blueray disk/media servers back between 2010 and 2011 and everyone of them hangs on Netflix regardless if it is wireless, or if it is wired straight from the router.  While I was always a huge fan of Sony during the 1980's and 1990's, making purchase of their XBR line televisions, Video 8, Betamax, monitors, and their other higher-end video equipment, because of the trouble I have had with their products over the past ten years, mostly due to issues of software that could be addressed, and their simple lack of support by either not providing the adequate firmware or by not responding to technical requests, I am no longer purchasing Sony products.  Sad to say, Sony, but it appears that I have now start looking toward the Koreans for my home video equipment.  I have replaced one of the faulty Blueray disk players already with a Roku, and it works perfectly, and with a far better user interface.

GOOD BYE, SONY!  HELLO SAMSUNG and ROKU.

Re: Netflix streaming constantly freezes and times out

I have been struggling with these Netflix performance issues for years with my KDL-46EX701. I was generally not able to stream Netflix during prime time viewing periods. It never made any sense, I suspected that I was being throttled by Netflix or my ISP. I could watch a TV show episode with no problems, and then when I'd try to watch the next one it would be stopped buffering more often than not. After doing some research and reading about the Sony server issue I threw in the towel and bought a Roku 3. It works great, wonderful interface and no performance issues. I don't know what Sony is thinking, they've lost me as a customer forever, my next television will be a Samsung.
