Windows Movie Maker can't detect video capture device-Handycam (mini-DV) DCR-HC96

I have a Handycam mini-DV (DCR-HC96) camera. Trying to transfer the tape contents to Windows Movie Maker.  Thought this worked once before with USB connection a long time ago, but now when I try it Movie Maker says it can't detect video capture device even though camera is on and USB cable connected.  I have Windows XP Professional.  Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
