Can't view videos from SD card on Windows 8

I got new laptop with Windows 8 OS.  My Sony DC-SX45 camcorder has a SD memory card with files on it. I tried to load the files on my computer to edit and post from MovieMaker.  The files were showing "MPEG" file system instead of normal "MP4" file system.  When I pulled them up, the screen was black.  I can hear the video but cannot see it.  It won't show in MovieMaker or Windows Media Player. I can view the video in Toshiba Video Player, but that's it.  Is there a setting on the camcorder I need to change?  Will it work with Windows 8 or is there an updated driver I need?  Any help with this issue is appreciated.  I want to post my videos but can't see the in Movie Maker so I can edit them before I post.

Re: Can't view videos from SD card on Windows 8

According to microsoft the format MP4 and MPEG2 are supported.

you can try to convert the format to WMV using following freeware

Re: Can't view videos from SD card on Windows 8

The camera records in the MPEG-2 format. If you are only hearing the audio of the videos that you have recorded, you may further check if the software you are using will support the MPEG-2 format.

You may also use PlayMemories Home in importing, playing back and editing footage taken by the camera. To download and install the software, you may access this link: http://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www/disoft/int/download/playmemories-home/index.php

You may also try updating your video codecs through system updates provided by Windows and your computer manufacturer.

Re: Can't view videos from SD card on Windows 8

Francis,
I'm having the same issue. I've used movie maker in the past on windows 7 with the camcorder, no problem. I've downloaded the new version of PMH and it does not see the mpg files, I've even updated the video codecs and still no luck. I've seen on the internet that Windows 8 does not support mpg files. Is there a way to change the file type on the camcorder?

thanks.

Hi kimbucklin! Unfortunately you cannot change the format (file type) of videos on the camcorder. Try using another video player on your computer that is capable in reading and playing back MPEG-2 file format.

I would suggest Video Converter Pro for converting any video file to WMV format (as well as many other)
