Old sony camcorder, what to use to transfer to computer

I got that old sony handycam (CCD TR96) in a garage sale for 2$, got a new battery and a 8mm tape for it. I did a short video and i would like to transfer it to my computer.

I have Ulead video software on my computer and today i received a RCA cable (yellow, red and white) on one end and a USB connector on the other end.

How do i transfer from the handycam to the computer, is there any turorial that i can read about it. It seems that all i can find is for the new camera (digital) so i'm looking for some help whit this.

Thanks

User Manual: https://docs.sony.com/release//CCDTR86.pdf

Look on page 16 of the manual and you will see the type of cable you need.  I doubt the cable you have with the USB connection on one end will work.  You can try connecting with the cable you have and when you do make sure the camcorder is set to VTR mode or it won't be recognized by the computer.

More than likely you will need a video capture device to go between the camcorder and the computer in order to capture video from the camcorder.

If you are using a Windows computer and have MovieMaker installed then you should be able, provided the camcorder is recognized by the computer, to capture the video.

Tutorial provided by Sony: https://us.en.kb.sony.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/41683/c/65,66/

You could also try a YouTube search for tutorials.

Re: Old sony camcorder, what to use to transfer to computer

Thanks VideoGeek.

Before posting here i did a search on Google for a way to capture the video from my Handycam to my computer. I'm still trying to do it following some procedures that i got from my searches but i was looking for another way to do it hoping that it was going to be more easier.

I'll go back to Google and search for a video capture device and see if i can find something. Any recommandation about it?

Re: Old sony camcorder, what to use to transfer to computer

You could try the Pinnacle Dazzle DVD Recorder.  It lists for $39.99 at B&H after a $15 instant savings.

Pinnacle Product page for the Dazzle Video Card Capture Device.  This is not the only out there but is what I found with a quick searchl.

With those and most, if not all, tape based camcorders there really is no short-cut for capturing the video.  It is a real-time process so that if you record an hour of video it will take an hour to capture the video.

Re: Old sony camcorder, what to use to transfer to computer

Hi VideoGeek.

It may take some time for me to get what i need to go further whit my project. For now i'm trying to find why the tape door is not opening fully when i use the button for it and why do i have a flashing triangle in the viewfinder when trying to record. Like i said, i got that handycam for 2$ in a garage sale, got a new battery and i have the wall plug to charge the battery and also to make the handycam working.

Let see what i can do with it, i'll come back when i can go further with this Smiley Happy

Look on page 70 of the user manual.  There you will find the warning indicators and what they mean.

kamouraska1954,

I think one general approach you maybe should follow is:

1.  Get this analog camcorder of yours working reliably, using your existing Video 8 tape cassette.

2.  If that works, buy a "Hi8" or Digital8 tape cassette, and a Sony "Digital8" camcorder.

3.  Record video with your analog camcorder and that Hi8 tape.

4.  Put that Hi8 tape into your Sony Digital8 camcorder.

5.  Post here, or read the Sony Digital8 manual, to find out how to transfer your recorded video from your Digital8 camcorder, to a computer.

(You might even be able to put your standard, Video 8 tape into the Digital8 camcorder, and do the transfer.  But in my opinion, do not try that until you are successful using the Hi8 cassette.)

Re: Old sony camcorder, what to use to transfer to computer

Thanks Dave.

First i have to see what is making a flashing triangle in the view finder. I think it could be some problems with the tape not working properly or the mechanism of it.

I went on the web to find how to open and repair the handycam but cannot find anything even on ifixit. I'll keep searching Smiley Happy
