DSC-HX90V won't power on and lens won't retract

I have had the DSC-HX90V for about 1 week. This camera is brand new and purchased through Amazon. I was viewing pictures and about to transfer the images from the camera to my phone when the camera stopped responding.

Symptoms

  • None of the buttons are responsive
  • The lens is out and won't retract
  • A small red light is flashing internally at an irregular pace
  • Battery nor AC power via USB will not power the camera up
  • Pressing the shutter button gives a slight movement inside the camera after powering up but nothing else
  • I am using the factory battery

I have attempted through various web articles:

  • Held the power button for 15 seconds
  • Removed the battery for longer than 1 minute and then attempted to restart
  • Attached the camera to a PC
  • Pushed and held each button including the display images button
  • Swapped SD cards
  • Removed SD card, formatted and reinserted

Other than the blinking red light, the camera has no signs of life. I am at my wits end. I have a Sony NEX-6 and have never had any issues. I bought this as a compact replacement and I was really enjoying this camera.

Please help.

I have also attempted intervals of 30 seconds and 1 minute of holding the power.

Leave the battery out for a full 24 hours.

I have left the camera off for three days and it still exhibits the identical behavior. This is ridiculous. The camera is effectively brand new. What are my options now?

Yes, of course. The battery was removed for three days. I plugged in the battery yesterday evening and the red light remains flashing at it's odd interval and the camera remains locked up.

Re: DSC-HX90V won't power on and lens won't retract

Sony indicates they will only repair the product. No offer to cross-ship a new camera and replace what is obviously defective. Their only option is repair. I will not repair a defective product. It makes no sense. I have a "lemon" that died less than 10 days from the time of purchase. Repairing the camera infers I get the same product back with the same potential defect to occur.

I have already scheduled a return from Amazon as I am well within the return window and will be purchasing something else. Unless someone from Sony can give me a viable reason for this defect, I will be forced to return choose another brand. I have had good luck with previous products but this is really really bad.

Let me ask you, would you trust this camera for a trip overseas knowing that it could up and die at any moment?

Very disappointing indeed. Waiting for a response before I share this experience all over social media.

That's definitely your best option.
