Firmware version 1.5 status report

Can anyone provide an indication when firmware 1.5 for the F3 will be available?

Re: Firmware version 1.5 status report

Is there any indication as to what this firmware version will include?

Is there any possibility it will open up the F3 to a new codec (specifically XDCA<HD)?

Thanks

Re: Firmware version 1.5 status report

At the very least we will have support for the new demand converter box, the CBK-DCB01

But adding new codecs to the F3 is (hardware) impossible

Regards

Re: Firmware version 1.5 status report

Hi Richard,

Your request would require Sony to include/unlock the Slog RGB 444 feature set into the update. Of course, it is possible but for marketing reasons, I would think they would keep this information close to their chest until they relesed the firmware update.

You may take some comfort knowing that Sony will be looking for ways to keep the F3 relevant on their product shelf sitting along side the F5 and F55, how they will do that is anyone's guess outside of Sony Professional.

My wish is that Sony will offer a robust firmware upgrade along with an incentive program for exisitng F3L and more overly F3K owners to keep their extremely capable cameras and purchase either an F5 or F55 along with the other bits of the ever expanding F series ecosystem. This will help Sony and the existing F3 owners in terms of the camera maintaining a decent valuation in the marketplace allowing existing operators the ability to expand their camera asernal rather than replace it and allow Sony the ability to get some sell through between now and NAB.

Hopefully, if they follow this track they will initiate it soon before F3 operators make what may become regretable selling decisions in the coming weeks.

Andrew, is this some sort of advanced knowledge you have from Sony?  Or are you speculating?

Re: Firmware version 1.5 status report

It ought to be clear from the language in my post, that what I posited was a desire of mine based on thinking through the complicated marketing scenario that Sony has found itself in of late.

I have no inside knowledge but have owned and operated Sony cameras for a number of years and you get a sense where things may be headed.

People who have non-disclosure agreements with Sony are very good about keeping them. I am not under NDA nor do I have any inside knowledge of their business.

You said "Sony will be looking for ways to keep the F3 relevant."  You didn't say "I think" or "in my opinion"...but whatever, I'm sorry for asking for clarification.

Fair crtiicism but explainable. For those of us who follow the forums relating to the F3 know that Sony has made deliberate efforts over the past 4 months to communicate directly and indirectly that the F3 is not going away.

The first communique was on DVinfo when it was revealed that Sony produced a rather sophisticated brochure selling the feature set of the F3 using testimonials from well known and well regarded camera operators and DPs who are using the F3 on serious productions. During the course of this campaign, Sony made it clear to those involved in the production of the brochure that the F3 was not going away any time soon. By inference this brochure was a renewal of Sony's commitment to this camera.

Secondly, in the lead up to the announcement of the F5 and the F55 through their "new F" campaign, Sony representatives stated over and over in social media posts and webinars that the F3 was going to continue to be part of their product line. They were not going to discontinue the F3.

For Sony to do a reversal on this, given the amount of effort that has gone into their social media campaign over the past half year, would be a disingenuous move. This is why I know Sony will do things to keep it relevant on their product shelf. They only have a few ways to do this. One is through price and the other way is through feature set or both. Maybe there are other ways but they are not apparent to me at the moment.
