Re: Firmware version 1.5 status report

[ Edited ]

Hi Jai,

Yes, under "Video Set" then "Dual-Link & Gamma Select". If you have the RGB S-Log key installed on your F3 then you can access the full range of choice in here. If you have it then you select "1.5G YPbPr422 and S-Log", The selection are shown on page 171 of the manual linked above. Then below the "Dual Link..." menu selection you have several menu items to choose if you want a LUT applied, if you want to turn on EI mode and then an item to select your ISO that is applied to your LUT not the source footage that you get out of the A/B connectors on the back. If you have the LUT turned on, it will apply the LUT to the SxS recording.

Be careful with this. Sounds great in principle, but in practice the color that results is "thin" for lack of a better word. The LUT is a 1D LUT so the color complexity is not there. You will see this when you bring it into your NLE and start to push it. Even in it's unalterated state, it often looks sub-standard. It can be usable but examine carefully before you commit to not having a backup external recording of the S-Log signal.

Re: Firmware version 1.5 status report

Do I have to buy the RGB S-Log Key? I just simply want to use this camera in low light situation without using any extra lights. I wanted to sale the camera but nobody is interested to buy it. I made a mistake to buy this expensive camera which is useless now.

Thanks again.

Jai,

Don't give up so easily! This camera has good light sensitivity. With dim interior house lighting you can shoot in CINE 4 with your lens wide open and get a usable shot. With Slog in Picture Profiles activated you gain a stop or two.

The camera is really only useless if you feel it is useless. It is quite capable of producing excellent footage. I know of at least a dozen FS7 owners that hugely regret selling their F3 when they bought the latest mid-tier cam from Sony. Unless you need super high-frame rate recording or 4K, the F3 is a fine camera, if you let it be so.

EDIT:

Yes you have to buy the key. It used to cost close to $3,000 USD. Now it is around $900. You can buy it used for between $400 and $500 with the SxS card that it comes on. You don't need it though. The Slog gamma in Picture Profiles gives you a lot of what the paid version does.
