F5/F55 future regarding High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) h.265

Is it possible and planned to eventually implement the ITU-T H.265 coding standard via firmware upgrade?

Also curious about that. Especially since HEVC has been created for 4K.

But, correct me if I'm wrong, AVC is hardware-accelerated in both the F5 and the F55, right? This makes HEVC support unlikely in my opinion.

Kindly calling on Peter Crithary to reply  (a post in February regarding this topic has remained unanswered).

Thank you!

Re: F5/F55 future regarding High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) h.265

All,

That is probably because I missed it. Currently we are totally focused on the XAVC codec. We use hardware encoding in the cameras to generate the XAVC files.

There are no plans to implement HEVC in the cameras.

Thus far HEVC is seeing development as a delivery codec. The encoding resrouces are steep so I would suspect that it might be some time before we see HEVC as an acquisition format.

Re: F5/F55 future regarding High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) h.265

Thank you Peter and Ned for your inputs.

Investing in a camera is getting more and more difficult.  It should be amortized in about one to max. two years. I would expect to see HEVC as acquisition format starting in 2015. That would go nicely with the announced 8K (trial) broadcasts of NHK in 2016. This would also give the consumer enough reason and time to upgrade from SD and HD.. straight to 8K.

.. now back to deciding which camera I should buy..  F5 or F55..

Re: F5/F55 future regarding High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) h.265

It's very very early in the HEVC development cycle.

XAVC is based on H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, which was drafted back in 2003. H265 was only drafted this year. Doing power efficient realtime encoding will not happen on current hardware, and is a work in progress. Also implementing smooth operation GPU accelerated codecs for post production is still a year or two away.

The energy is better spend with optimising the XAVC encoder, with better compression and maybe a higher bitrate.
