SDK request for F5/F55 for custom and streamlined camera operaton

[ Edited ]

Hi Sony/Peter C,

Are there any plans, or even some possibility, to release some form of a SDK for the F5/F55 whereby advanced users can program via firmware update their own operating mode for the camera's along with specific functions and/or features?

For example this would allow advanced users to create a single operating mode which could be highly customizable from camera options, features and settings including the ability to select specific color science in combination with gamma curves (slog2 or slog3), maybe white balance options, etc. and more...

I think it would help address much of the operating confusion that arrises by operators and DP's who find the camera highly complex. Any rental house renting F5/F55 would vouch for this since confusion is quite common with F camera renters who do not own the camera and therefore get a chance to spend days, weeks or months learning the ins and outs of the camera.

I know many people are happy with the camera as it is today so for them this wouldn't need to apply, but as expressed by many users they have needs for very specific assignable buttons, or have asked for MLUTs in S&Q mode and playback (just to give a few examples) so perhaps by scaling back on some features not in use it would allocate more memory and processing power capability to perform specific functions that are desired. Similarly it has been suggested in the past to give the camera two modes, "ENG" and "Cinema" because the guys shooting landscapes, stock footage, or TV do not need the same things those doing TV commerical or film work do. Let's not pretend there aren't different requirements for various industry segments.

From my own personal end of things, and I have written about this extensively over the last few years on my blog as well as forums and articles, the distinction between custom mode and CineEI mode is the greatest flaw of these camera's. When selecting either operating mode users are forced to chose one based on half the functions they need leaving some other functions stray in the other mode they can not access. I think the worst split for me is the fact that the old Sony color science is locked into the Custom Mode and the new Sony color science is locked into the CineEI mode. A lot of people will simply defend that CineEI mode is strictly for if you are going through a post production workflow process but what if you want to use the newer color science with "Custom Mode" type of features? Currently you can not, yet Custom Mode is where we find white balance functions, ISO adjustibility, not to mention missing MLUTs.

The F55 camera is the absolute best camera I have ever owned from Sony, Canon, Panasonic and RED camera companies but it could easily be far better. It's current greatest strengths are also its weakness and realistically I don't see it as a major hurdle to overcome some of it's current limitations and nuances.

Sincerely,

I'm glad this is being talked about again. Red has gained some really cool features with Fools Control App.

Even if say an iPad didn't locally save things, the purpose of manipulating and recalling stored settings on the F55/5, using a touch screen app is more productive than looking at the side of a camera or thru the viewfinder for what seems like an eternity when you are exploring.

I would love to be able to use the iPad mini and control this camera fully. Look at some of the industry apps for motion control time lapse as well as real time motion control hardware that make use of the iPad.

Sony, why bog yourself down with having to come up with the software? Make an SDK with access to the whole kaboodle so third party code writing maniacs can deliver and deal with updates and the like.

I don't think this is an unreasonable request. It's actually a smart business move.

Yes like the Foolcontrol app but for iOS and Android too.

Ditto - everything Dennis said. This would be to Sony's benefit.

I just watched the third video on the Fool web site.

CLICK HERE FOR RANDOM VEGETABLE and a video.

Seriously, saving out the presets AND MORE SO the building of the presets. It would make tweaking a pleasurable endeavor. Sony, you gotta watch this clip.

I think part of the issue (if there really is one) is that Sony branded this camera as a tool for any production environment.  Especially for broadcast.  A real Swiss Army Knife of Super 35 cameras.  Red focuses almost entirely on cinema production and gears their tools towards that. It looks like they also provide some form of SDK for third party developers.  I doubt Sony will ever provide that.  Just look at their reaction when someone found a way to get 4K out of an F5.  They don't like people tinkering with their ******.

I guess my gripe, if it were to be defined as such, is that FoolsControl is not unlocking anything. Sony already allows basic connectivity. Being so called cinema cameras with that option to bake in, you have to build your scene files using a 3rd party monitor to view setting in a decent size imaging device. I disagree that Sony doesn't want you tweaking, if in fact you are not shooting raw and handing off finished data, the responsibility for the look is up to you, not Sony.

In fact when all the jibjab about LUTS and controlling where the LUTS were being used, if Sony has hit a wall, why dont they develop a plug n play LUT box that mounts in line with the V-Mount sandwich, grabs a signal from the main bus, grabs power from the V-Mount battery, and has two or three SDI/HDMI output spickets.

I'd like that LUT box.... very much.  Either from Sony or if even from a 3rd party.  Small enough to take on all shoots & be powered by existing power...but also good enough to send those Lut signals out to client monitor.

(But do it quick cause I'm moving toward 7Q+ or 502 purchase soon enough).

Would be great for Sony to suddenly have a ton of people engineering out the kinks in their UI to make it the perfect shooting experience.
