v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

Haven't seen any discussion of it yet, but it strikes me that the new 4k 480 codec is perhaps the most exciting aspect of the latest announcements. Compressed 4k with a manageable datarate and minimal artifacting.

Peter et al, are we able to get the specific specs on the codec yet? 4:2:2 is a given, but is it still just 10-bit, or will it be 12-bit? (Please, pretty please!)

Also, is there any chance of seeing a similar update to 2k recording? 12-bit 4:4:4 XAVC in 2k would be extremely useful.

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

Is the codec based on hardware?  If so, shouldn't we have had 4K 480 since day one?  I haven't seen any indication that the F55 can even support 4K 480.  Is there an article pointing to this?  I'm only asking because I don't know how much can be achieved with just a firmware update on 3+ year old hardware.

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

Data wise, the F55/5 can handle about 600Mb when shooting XAVC HD at 180fps. So 4K at 480 in 30p should seem easy.

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

Thanks Bill.

I wasn't sure if altering the existing codec to a higher bitrate could be done through firmware.  But seeing as Sony would be changing just the amount of compression and not the codec itself means  it's probably possible.  Hopefully it doesn't mean new SXS cards.

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

[ Edited ]

All,

XAVC Class300 is the current implementation of the 10 bit 422 XAVC in the F5, F55 cameras. We are able to implement Class480 up to 30p because it is still within the bandwidth, throughput threshold of the existing SxS card format for sustained write speeds.

As a benchmark, the Class300 is 300Mbps at 30p. And the Class 480 is 480Mbps at 30p. It is simply turning up the datarate, and with a slightly better PSNR - Peak Signal to Noise Ratio - both classes are within the 10 bit 422 XAVC implementation

As you may know, XAVC is Sony's implementation of H.264, at the very highest quality @Level 5.2. The encoding architecture is treating each frame based on the unique picture characteristics. In other words the camera is independently encoding each frame based on the complexity information frame by frame. This is very different to competitor codecs in competitor cameras in which they set the encoding characteristcs to the first frame only and do not change during the writing of that file.

Whether you are going to really see a difference in picture quality between the existing Class300 and the Class480 will very much depend on what you are shooting, the level of complexity within each frame.

Several third party workflow vendors already support Class480 including Resolve and Adobe. If you look in their XAVC settings you will see it listed.

Regards

Peter

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

Thank you Peter.

Is the existing threshold a limitation of the current SxS cards or the write speed of the F5/F55? Can the F5/55 attain write speeds in access of 600mbps even if it required new cards?

Thank you.

Thank you Peter ..

This announcement of V8.0 is really good news and happy for the continuling support and updates to the F55/5.

These cameras have truly been a great investment for us both in quality and updatabilty!

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

Is it possible for XAVC 4K 480 to be added to the FS7 as well in a future firmware?

I believe the newer Sony XQD cards could handle the data rates?

It would be very useful to have for certain shots.

On the whole I find XAVC 300 to be pretty good but I was filming in Bangkok recently and was shooting some 4k material on the river with a lot of detail in (moving water/skyscrapers) - you can see in the rushes XAVC 300 was struggling to cope. Would be great to be able to use 480 in these situations as I'm trying to avoid lugging a shogun or 7q around with me!

Going to repost this in the FS7 group as a feature request. Just wanted to see if there were also F5/F55 owners who were using FS7 as well and think this would be useful.

Thanks

Simon

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

Simon,

I will have to check about that, yes water is a toture test for any codec. Class 480 may indeed help you there.

Peter
