Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

Mark, I wish!..  We were supposed to film those days this fall but they lost their budget for video production. Never fun losing your biggest client.

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

I shot some test sof 480 vs Raw in a "normal" lighting environment, but one with lots of detail in hair, carpet fibers etc. Honestly hard to see any difference, even on a large plasma screen and with 200% blowups in Prepare. I'll try some with underexposure next.  I'm sure Raw will handle highlights better, but 480 is pretty impressive, and Avid ingests in with no problem. Makes not having OCN a little less disappointing - the Sony trade in deal isn't enough to entice me although the R7 looks really nice.

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

I have a low serial number F55 and see that I cannot do the version 8.0 firmware update. I need to contact a Sony service center, apparently. Could somebody tell me what needs to be done and what the cost is to enable v8.0? Looks like a new ROM chip or chipset is needed?

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

I see a surprising improvement in this V8.0 XAVC-I 4k 480 codec. I was not expecting it to be noticeable, but it is.

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

480 Mbps doesn't work with S&Q.

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

Class 480 might not be available for S&Q as the camera may not be able to deal with writing around 1Gb/s to the SxS cards.

Class 480 is great and quite a big step up from class 300. I think there is scope for Class 480 to replace ProRes as a delivery format for certain productions. Given that Apple appears intent on abandoning pro vdeo production and quick time is no longer supported on PC's there is a space for someone to come up with a family of modern efficient codecs (ProRes is very old tech now) that are truely cross platform. If Sony could do a 444 version it could become a very popular codec. We really do need a modern alternative to ProRes.

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

12-bit 444 is already in the XAVC white paper... just needs to be implemented!

Obviously it'd be cool if the cameras could do it (then again, there is X-OCN)...

...but it'd be more useful in software. Record RAW, use software to convert that to XAVC 4:4:4 12-bit, if required.

It exists in AVCUltra (Panasonic) too.

(On that note I always wondered what if any the difference is between XAVC and Panasonic AVC... they seem to have exactly the same options).

Would be nice to see Class200 for 1080/2K in the cameras too.

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

Gents, may be a silly question but can the XQD G Series cards support 4K 480?  The write speed on the card is listed as 440.

Cheers!
