Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

Does anyone  ( Peter Smiley Happy ) know  if the PMW-PZ1 will play back XAVC class 480?  With the rapid development of technology I'm getting paranoid about rapid obsolescence.

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

[ Edited ]

I recently had a chat with a post house in Toronto who were grading XAVC UHD for a series. I was surprised to here that they were seeing a LOT of artifacting in XAVC UHD. Like unacceptable.

The show had been sold to NHK and as you know NHK is quite ****** about quality control. When UHD/4K shows are delivered their qc department splits the picture into four - 50" screens and a single person watches each quad. It didn't take long to find faults. I'm very happy with my f55 and all the firmware upgrades etc. I'm not complaining but I think this is a fix and not a upgrade/feature.

Yes there are complex shots etc that stretch the bitrate but that shouldn't need be a consideration or a wooden leg to stand on.  You either do it well or go back to the drawing table.  A robust Internal UHD bitrate should have been worked out long ago.

Again - generally happy with my camera, I'm a sony guy but the cracks are forming..

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

Agree'd. The 240 @ 24 in 4K is barely enough in my opinion, most of the time it's sufficient but a difficult scene will break it. Even in 1080 HD XAVC I've seen this happen, fortunately only a few times in three years but it was shocking. Was a well lit interior at a recording studio, in Custom Hypergamma at 2000iso, locked off with people moving in the foreground, the wall behind them was a dark insulated sound fabric and had this large light grey horizontal "stripe" going across it. On only the grey stripe was massive artifacting like I had never scene before. The camera had been APR and black balanced that day as normal and I couldn't really explain it. I've read since that part of XAVC is it "interpolates" areas in the frame that are not moving and identical to the pixels around it. (This might be a 100% technically incorrect statement but the idea of it would explain the phenomena I experienced). As good as XAVC is I always wondered why they didnt offer it in different compression levels. ie: ProRes proxy, LT, reg, HQ etc. Especially since the camera can easily handle it. At least in HD we have the option to using one of the SR codecs. I have a eight day shoot coming up in that same room and will test the lightest SR and see what happens.

I believe you will find the SR quite nice!

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

Craig,

Yes the PZ1 will support play back of Class 480. As a side note the HD XAVC is known as Class 100 (100Mbps in 30p)

To Mark's comment, yes for HD the SR Codec is superb. If it is good enough for Avatar, then....

SR also supports RGB in HD at 440Mbps. The codec is very unique in that parts of every frame are uncompressed.

Regarding workflow support, you can use RAW Viewer from the RAW data to SR, and plugins for editing in FCP X and Avid can be downloaded from here: The Catalyst suite is also supported.

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

Oh yeah, I've used all the SR flavors before and they're great. Im just saying as much as the boost in XAVC 4K is welcomed, it would be great in HD too for the times when shooting SR doesnt work for the production. It cant be that hard to implement also, could it?

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

Thank you for the follow up Peter.

I quite often use RAW Viewer to convert 4K RAW to SR @ 440 (even tried 880) and the results are stunning.  Doesn't work for everyone's workflow though.

Re: v8.0 XAVC 4k 480 codec

Hi Peter

Any news on whether XAVC-I 480 might be made available on future firmware upgrades to the FS7?

I see firmware v4.0 hasn't implemented it.

Thanks

Hey Bill, did you ever re-shoot that scene in SR and how were the results?
