Cameras + Formats App

Hi all! I've posted a few times to the Sony forums, but I wanted to introduce myself and an app I made:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id890528993

The app is fundamentally a reference tool. Basically, I'm a shooter/colorist in NYC, and in my earlier days I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what all the options were in shooting digital cinema. I realized that there was no single resource with out there that collected the basic information on cameras, the formats they shoot, and their compatibility with editing systems... so I decided to make one! And for good measure, it's got a space calculator too (the most comprehensive one out there I believe, since KataData stopped being updated).

I'd love any feedback you guys can offer. Also a special thanks to Doug Bierschenk from Sony support for all the help! Thanks!

Re: Cameras + Formats App

Yes, unfortunately just iPhone for now. We're looking into the costs/difficulty of producing an Android version.

In the meantime, would an OS X or Windows app benefit you?

Re: Cameras + Formats App

Just bought this.

Camera database is not very up to date.

Also I think the calculator is completely wrong.

Just entered

XAVC-I

1920 x 1080

128 GB

Gives me a running time of 3 Hr 21 minutes

But should be just over 2 hours,

I want my money back!

Re: Cameras + Formats App

Hi Mike, thanks for the feedback. We try to keep the camera database as up-to-date as we can, but at the rate new cameras are released it's impossible to keep up with them all. If you have a specific suggestion for a camera you'd like added, please let us know here and we'll try to get it in for the next update:

On which frame-rate, and on which camera do you get 2 hrs for 128GB of footage?

Re: Cameras + Formats App

Running time on FS7 & F55.

Are you saying the calculator is right and the camera is wrong somehow?

Regarding camera database:

F55 info is not really accurate RAW Speeds, PRORES etc. etc.

F65 info is very scant and isn't really accurate either.

Weapon isn't listed at all.

Varicam LT isn't listed at all.

Just off the top of my head, I haven't really looked into all the cameras to check the specs, this is just a few cameras I looked at at random.

I thought the whole idea of the database was that it WAS kept up to date?

That's how you are promoting it.

Otherwise isn't it just like every other camera databse out there (except it costs AU$14.02)?

Re: Cameras + Formats App

Hi Mike,

"Are you saying the calculator is right and the camera is wrong somehow?"

In a way, yes. One of the difficulties with Sony cameras is the CRC error checking they use. This means normal calculations can be off by 10-20%. So someone trying to calculate XAVC footage on a hard drive will come up with a different result than someone trying to calculate it on the camera itself. We're working on a way to compensate for this in a future update.

"F55 info is not really accurate RAW Speeds, PRORES etc. etc."

It's true we havent added ProRes yet. This is a lower priority for us as it can be calculated via the ProRes calculator. But we'll try to fit it in to the next update.

Could you please be specific in regard to what part of the F55/F65 info is not accurate? The information has been vetted by a Sony employee, so

The Red Weapon will be added in the next update. It was going to be added in the previous update but as I recall there was still some info that was unconfirmed. The Varicam LT was only announced last month (I'm not even sure it's shipping yet), so we will try to add it in the next update, but as we're a small company we can only do new updates every couple months.

"I thought the whole idea of the database was that it WAS kept up to date? That's how you are promoting it. Otherwise isn't it just like every other camera databse out there (except it costs AU$14.02)?"

I understand your frustration, though with respect I think the app is worth AU$14.02 even if it doesnt have the very latest cameras yet. I'm not familiar with any other camera databases with a comparable amount of information.

Best,

Zak
