Better Long Term Firmware Support For All Cameras (A5100, A6000, A7, A7R, A7S, A7m2, A7Rm2, A7Sm2, All Future Cameras).

Many people feel Sony is the best when it comes to camera sensors.


Whenever Sony comes up with a new camera, sometimes they receive firmware updates to correct bugs, add features, etc.


Problem is, such firmware support is time limited, as any time Sony brings out a new camera, the preceding model gets forgottgen and no more new updates seem to show up.




  • The Nikon D700 was introduced in 2008, was discontinued in 2012 (4 years after introduction), but the last firmware update came out in 2013 (5 years after introduction, 1 year after being discontinued).
  • Compare that to the Sony A7, which was introduced in 2013. The last firmware update for it is dated 2015, a mere 2 years after introduction.
  • Same with the Sony A6000. Introduced in 2014, last firmware update is dated 2015, and the succesor already came out. *One year only*.
  • Etc.


People see that as Sony just wanting to pump out more bodies. People understand that you need to make your profits, but many potential buyers consider after sales support essential, and part of such support includes constant, timely and useful firmware updates.


So, please, provide better long term firmware support for all cameras, current and future.

The Sony policy is a shame and not professional. Feature requests of hundred of customers never satisfied:


Now, TechART propose a motorized adapter that will provide auto-focus to all existing manual lenses for A7II owners. Not for the A7 owners who gave their confidence and money to SONY, helping the success of this.line of product. Because no third party PDAF proposed via a firmware Update to A7 owners, majority of the customers of this line of products.. While the A7 is still in the Sony Catalog !!!!!

Same remark for the uncompressed raws.


How to transform Sony enthusiasts customers into frustrated enemies..(I will never buy a Sony product anymore, till this request will be satisfied).


At least SONY, bring-us PDAF support to Sony A7 via firmware update. Don't believe we will buy the A7II under duress because your lack of support.. And lenses for our discontinued body. Bad calculation.

Sony NEEDS TO RELEASE MORE FIRMWARE UPDATES, not more bodies! We love your bodies, but give us more updates!!


It's ridiculous, you don't see Apple releasing the iPhone 6, give it iOS 8, then after a year, no more firmware updates. 


Sony, we love your products, but you need to improve on the software because this is scaring me away from your products in the future.

Agree 100% with the previous posts.  I'm second guessing my switch to the Sony A7ii after the initial buzz and eccitement has worn off.  I kick myself for putting out $5,000 min. in Sony products after finding the lack of care or concern in keeping firmware up to date with the latest and greatest initially sold.

I can shoot in uncompressed RAW / TIFF on my iPhone, but not on my A6000... Come on Sony update this firmware so I can get all the quality that the A6000 is capable of with uncompressed RAW!

Agree 100%. It may be financially beneficial in the short term to abandon all products after 24 months. This way, users who want or need the new features introduced afterwards are forced to upgrade and instantly generate revenue. But I doubt this will be wise in the long term, especially considering that Sony is more and more targetting professional users with its A7 line-up. Actively keeping features from the users for the sake of profit causes frustration in the user base. Happy customers will likely get their next product from the same company, frustrated customers not so much.


I'm very happy with the results of my A7II. But there's much to be improved about its user interface. That's why I ain't happy with the current Sony update policy. My next camera may be due in three or four years. From my current experience, it's not going to be a Sony. But they are free to convince me again.

I'm a happy owner of an A7 and a A6000, both great cameras that deserve a refreshed software. Yes, sooner than later I will get the latest models but I wouldn't mind to even pay a few bucks to have a more friendly firmware as the newest models have. Please Sony, make it happens!

I'm on board with this as well.  


I think it's especially important that Sony offer firmware updates to any camera that is still being sold new.  Anything beyond that would be amazing, but seriously, there are some basic features that need to be added to a lot of current cameras. 


A couple kind dumb examples from the A7ii - Minimum and maximum Auto ISO shutter speed, the ability to assign EVF/LCD selection to a custom key.

I imagine it should be easy enough for Sony to keep their hardware updated. I know will not buy in the future any camera that doesn't offer uncompressed RAW as an option.

Switched as a professional from Nikon to a 7r2 and unfortunatly in handling there is still a lack of speed and stability. Just try to use your smartphone as a remote and try to operate the camera... it's a pain. Still so many features, details missed in firmware during daily use of the camera.

I like the image quality but dont recommend the camera to colluges due to too many small bugs and not a very good support at all - as I knew from NPS - NIkon Prof. Service


Please work on that and release a firmware for a more fluent working camera

I agree and feel this lack of support is unfair to customers! We paid a lot of money for these cameras, and have a right to expect they will be supported to the same degree as offered by other camera manufacturers (especially at this price point). I have submitted a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Hopefully they can at least get an official response.
