NOTICE for Windows 8 customers: Freeze on black screen

[ Edited ]

Issue

On Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro computers, there is a possibility that the computer will freeze at startup and display a black screen when (1) the Hybrid Sleep feature is enabled, and (2) you put the computer into sleep mode or Hybrid Sleep mode, and (3) power to the computer is lost when the computer is asleep (for example, the battery runs down). For more information, please read the Microsoft® Knowledge Base article,  “Windows 8 freezes on black screen after the computer resumes from sleep mode” (2850674) at the link below:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2850674

Solution

We recommend that you install the latest Windows 8 software updates using Windows Update, and review the Microsoft Knowledge Base article identified above.

Steps to check if Windows Update is enabled
1)     Point to upper right corner of screen to open the charms.

2)     Click the Search charm, then click Settings.

3)     Type “Windows Update.”

4)     Click Windows Update.

5)     Click Turn automatic updating on or off.

6)     In the Change settings window, select Install updates automatically (recommended).

7)     Click OK to apply. This will download and install windows updates available for your system automatically.
