4 GB Memory Installed, (3 GB usable) - What does this mean?

I have a Sony VGC-LT25

Ii came with 3 GB of memory installed (1 GB,and 2GB modules)

I replaced the 1 GB module with a 2 GB module bringing the memory up to 4 GB total

On the System control panel the system shows 4GB total installed but reads (3 GB usuable)

What does this mean and is there some setting I need to change to allow for the full 4GB to be usable?

Please use plain text.

Re: 4 GB Memory Installed, (3 GB usable) - What does this mean?

If your OS is 32-bit XP or Vista, the system can only use 3-3.57GB of memory.

32-bit Windows 7 "sees" 4GB but in that case, some of the RAM may be unusable because it is reserved for graphics use.

Thank you for responding.
My Vaio has Windows 7 on it. It was shipped with Windows Vista which I upgraded to Windows 7 a year ago. I just recently added the extra memory.
