Re: [New Sony Vaio Pro] Wifi Issue!

Hello

I've had my Vaio Pro 13 (I7,256GB SSD,8GB RAM with Touch, bought on Sony Store Switzerland) for about one week now and I had the same Wifi issues like all of you. Wifi works fine next to the router but in an other room I cannot connect to the internet (when the signal still shows 4bars...). I installed all drivers and updates and disabled BT and so on. But nothing helped.

So I returned my Pro today and will recieve a new one next week. If the new Pro has the same issues, I will probably have to buy a Ultrabook from an other brand. It's sad because I really like the Pro 13 Smiley Sad

Re: [New Sony Vaio Pro] Wifi Issue!

Hi,

I have resolved my problems with Chrome and file downolading.

Problem was with Macafee and special macaffe parental. I have unistal all macaffe programs and right now all sites loading fast, full and all file are downloading.

PS. I have Norton 360 as security manager.

Uff, also i have checked that internet is much more stable and faster.

Re: [New Sony Vaio Pro] Wifi Issue!

Thank you sebastians for your reply! But I uninstalled Macaffe right after unpacking my Pro- that's the first thing I do with all my Laptops (I hate Macaffe). But it did not help in my case...

Re: [New Sony Vaio Pro] Wifi Issue!

linanja, I also thinked that uninstalled Macaffe, but today (after two weeks of investigation) I've surprised that there is something like Macaffe Parental "something" ... and this soft make me problems with loading pages in webbrowser and block me downloading files on 99%.

Of course I had also the same problems with WiFi card and after instal all W8 and WiFi Card updates / drivers and uninstall at all Macaffe everything looking and working well.

So Its could meaning that problem with WiFi is multidimensional problem on: W8, Card Drivers, Antyvirus and something else not knowed issues Smiley Sad

Thank you Keiren again,

It does not seem to install, these are below versions.

Do I need to install the one of 12 Jul 13 (16.0.5.3) first.

And should I also install the Bluetooth Drives (Intel) as below.

Bluetooth Driver (Intel) Update version 3.0.1306.0342-2

Wireless LAN Driver (Intel) Update version 16.1.0.14Wireless LAN Driver (Intel) Update version 16.0.5.3

12 Jul 201316.0.5.3

Okay, there are a few things you are going to have to try for this. I hate it when drivers don't install. You can go ahead and install the Bluetooth update if you wish. I'm going to focus on the driver installation issue. First I need you to check what your card is listed as. After that we are going to uninstall the WiFi driver and try install the 16.1 version and, if the 16.1 version does not work, the 16.0.5 version. I'll lay out the steps below. I suggest copying the instructions below into a text file and saving it somewhere as you will not have internet in the second half:

1. Check your wireless card model: Open your Windows Explorer. Right click on "My Computer" on the left side and select "Manage". From the left menu select Device Manager. Expand the "Network Adapters" section. You should see a label for Intel Wireless-N 7260 or Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7260. If it is there, right click it and select Properties. Under Driver it will tell you your current driver version. While here, also check the Advanced tab and see what the "Value" drop down says for 802.11n Channel Width. If it says 20Mhz only then switch it to Auto. This tends to help a very little but any improvement is good at this point.

If it is not there then look for anything that would indicate a Wi-Fi card or a yellow exclamation mark. If you find either, right click it and select the Details tab. From the Property dropdown select Hardware Ids and copy the first line and let me know what it says. Again, this is for if the Intel 7260 is not listed.

2: If you do see the 7260 in the list and it's already up to date with 16.1.0.14 then you are one of the people the driver update did not help. If it is lower then there is something else wrong. If it is lower then we are going to do a few things, namely we are going to uninstall the driver and try it from 16.1.0.14. Before we do that though we need to make a System Restore point just in case. Always have a backup plan. First off, keep the Device Manager window open, open up the control panel from the charm bar (right hand, bottom corner with mouse or swipe from the right to the left from the right edge) and select Control Panel. We won't bother finding System Restore point manually. In the Search Box type in Restore and look for Create a Restore Point. It should open the System Properties window under System Protection. Go ahead and hit the "Create"  button. Name it whatever you want but make sure it is indicative of trying to fix the Wifi driver. When it's finished you can close the system properties.

3. I would do this if you already haven't. Download both versions of the driver before uninstalling the driver. Once you have both files locally switch back to the Device Manager. If you have not already save these instructions locally in a text file. Right click the Intel 7260 listing and hit Uninstall. It should ask you if you really want to and there is a checkbox that says "Delete the driver software for this device". Check it and hit OK. Restart your computer. Now try to install the 16.1.0.14 drivers. If it doesn't work make sure you note what the error message says. If it does work then test your connection. You have a rough chance of it helping and a chance that it will only slightly improve the WiFi connection. If it does not install then try the 16.0.5 version and see if it installs. If it does, restart the computer and try the 16.1.0.14 drivers again. If you receive the same error let me know.

4. If neither installs then we have to use the restore point we created earlier to reset the wireless drivers back to whatever you have now. Open the Control Panel again and search for Restore again. This time you want to pick "Restore my computer to an earlier time" and select "Open System Restore". It should open System Restore. You'll want to pick "Choose a different restore point" before clicking Next. The restore point we created should be listed. Go ahead and select it before clicking Next. hit finish and let it do its job.

In the event you have to do 4 then something is corrupted somewhere. You can try using the recovery partition to restore windows to 0 and see if you can install the drivers then. If that doesn't work then I would contact Sony Support for repairs/replacement. Don't let the low level tech support people talk you through too many tests. Most of them are useless and are prompted by a computer.

Cheers,
Keiran

Re: [New Sony Vaio Pro] Wifi Issue!

Gosh, I'm disgusted by the Sony Pro Vaio Pro Touch 13 I've just bought here in London! The wifi is unstable and much much worse than my other laptop, which is a 7 yr old HP!! I've tried both fixed suggested here - setting the 2.4 GhZ setting to "Auto", and updated the driver as well. It has vastly improved the wifi connection stability, but the issue is still there. How could Sony release this laptop without detecting this ultra obvious problem, and how  on earth did all the cnet and other reviewers miss this problem? Never trusting any of those websites again

I'm going to the Sony store as soon as I can to try and return this. No way am I paying £1300 for something that gives me so much problems on day 1!! Ugh.

Re: [New Sony Vaio Pro] Wifi Issue!

Has anyone purchased a Vaio Pro, returned it back because of wifi issues, got a replacement, and is happy with the wifi performance afterwards?

or all Vaio pros have the same issue?

I don't have the notebook just as yet, but I'm planning to buy one shortly, around early August from Sony USA.

it is important to know if all the problems mentioned here, affect 100% of the sold notebooks, or most of them, or a few of them.. Any one out there that is really happy with the performance?

and do u think is a matter of time for this issue to be solved? or is it a hardware problem, so all current users will be stuck with an unusable wifi chip inside.. ? I'm having a friend coming in from the States and i'm really worried whether to order the notebook to him or not.

Thanks

  • What is the exact issue?  (please be specific)

Download speed reduces dramatically the further I move away from the router (75% down around 8 metres away with one internal wall in the way). Full speed achieved next to the router. I do not experience any drop outs during the day.

  • What is the Wireless Driver Version installed? (Wireless Version - 16.1.0.14)

Latest version

  • Brand and Model name of access point (Router)

Cisco Linksys WRT320N

  • Firmware version of Access Point (Router)

Latest version

  • Approximate Distance of notebook to the router or access point

8 metres

  • Security type (WEP, WPA, etc)

WPA Personal/AES

  • Network type (A,B, G, or N)

N

  • Freq Type : 2.4Ghz or 5GHz

2,4GHz

This is a real shame....It's not that my laptop is unusable, but I'm paying my broadband company more for faster connection which I can't use. There's also the fact that when I am out and about I may get even worse speeds when the router is not near to me. Disappointed!!

Yes, me. Wifi in second Vaio works fine out of the box.

Re: [New Sony Vaio Pro] Wifi Issue!

Thanks a lot Keiran

I was able to install 16.1.0.14, it seems to have improved WiFi a little bit. The speed next to router is 15mbps and in next room is less than 1mbps, downloads do not happen the connection drops out. Where as the speed on my 3 years old laptop is 35mbps next to router and 25mbps in other room. I am not happy with this machine but not sure if to seek replacement or refund. What speeds are you and others are able to get for those doing good, after the update, please.
