VAIO Fit slow wifi

So I bought a brand new Fit model CTO laptop (SVF-somethingsomethingA1490x) just a week ago (Also, really irked that I got it right before Sony decides to do the special upgrade promotion. I wonder if I can recoup my losses there for early adopting half a week early). Everything else seems fine and dandy except for the wifi speeds.

My home network, we should be getting up to 50 mb speeds which every other computer reaches:

Wired connection: 43 megabytes per second.

Wireless: about 20 or 30 (limited by the WLAN card where it caps at either 150 megabits or 300 megabits)

My Fit (and upon further investigation my E11 model from last year) seems to be capped at 72 megabits per second -- turning my new machine into something where its download speeds are twice as slow as the upload speed which boggles my mind.

So the numbers for the Fit: 8 megabytes down, 17-20 megabytes up

Where as my older F series (the one before the model with the raised armrest) is hitting 144 megabits per second. That one has an Intel 6250 card that supports dual band radios with MIMO functionality.

I did not know prior to purchasing that I would be getting a neutered Broadcom BCM43142 which is SISO and for something is just straight up capped at 72 megabits.

I've done everything from installing, uninstalling, the Sony provided drivers (roll back included), tried the Lenovo support drivers, but honestly, this is insufferable. Tried to adjust the power options on the adapter configuration to no avail, but this just seems like a very limited WLAN card that Sony bundled due to its low power requirement and bluetooth capability.

I work IT and I'm at my wit's end with this. I'm hoping that it's a defective unit especially since the download is non-existent/slower than the upload speeds. If anyone has any tips, that would be great.

Thank you,

~Paul

Re: VAIO Fit slow wifi

In regards to the portion of your inquiry which appears to be a pricing issue, "Also, really irked that I got it right before Sony decides to do the special upgrade promotion. I wonder if I can recoup my losses there for early adopting half a week early".

If this was purchased from the http://store.sony.com/ website here is the policy about price matching;

Q. Does the Sony online store have a price match policy?

A. We offer a Price Guarantee policy. If the price of your product drops on our website within 30 days of your receipt date, we will refund you the difference. Please e-mail us or call us toll free to request your refund. Sony also offers price matching on select offerings. Please call us toll free at 1-877-865-7669 and speak with a Sales Specialist for more information.

I am escalating the technical portion for further assistance.

Re: VAIO Fit slow wifi

I have a very similar issue, I believe, except that I don't think throttling is the issue for me. I just got a new Sony Vaio Fit 15 (SVF15A190X) last Thursday and I've noticed that my wifi signal strength is significantly diminished as I get further away from my router. When I'm not even 100 feet away from the router, I get a signal strength of 2 bars and only about 6 Mbps down. My five year old laptop in the same position gets 24 Mbps down which is what I  would expect of the Vaio. The upload speeds are similar enough that it isn't a concern. Hoewever, my five year old laptop shouldn't have a better wireless card than my brand new laptop in my opinion.

I know for a fact that all my drivers are updated and that it's not the router's fault (as evidenced by my five year old laptop being fine). After numerous reinstallations and even a chat session with support, the issue goes unresolved. I want to know if this is a hardware issue or a driver issue that has been neglected since release.

It's unacceptable in my mind that such an issue exists.

Re: VAIO Fit slow wifi

I've since talked with chat support three times with no solution to be found. This is incredibly frustrating and I'm likely going to send my new laptop in for repair. I'll be following this thread for the next day or so, but that's it before I send it in.

Re: VAIO Fit slow wifi

Scott,

Thank you for the link to the information. I contacted customer support and it was a very seamless call.

However, the wifi thing is still just awful. Stopped by the local Sony Store where he claims is a bad WLAN card issue.

But, I just installed an Intel Centrino 6235 card and speeds have dramtically improved to 30 Mbps. However, still drastically slower than my older F serires which is pulling in 58 Mbps.

The fact that I had to purchase a separate card just seems disingenuous to me. Technical support online wasn't all that helpful either.

Re: VAIO Fit slow wifi

Hello everyone,

Just a quick update, last week we submitted an escalation to engineering indicating that various users were not satisfied with the wifi speeds on the VAIO Fit series models. Engineering is currently investigating the matter.   I do not have a solution at this time but I will post any information that arises from the escalation as soon as possible.  Thank you for your patience.

Any updates on this issue? I'm still dealing with fairly crippling internet speeds and it's a pain. Still waiting.

Re: VAIO Fit slow wifi

Yes mine too.  I took back two of them because it thought it was a defect.  Now my third one is still has super slow wifi, and very weak signal.  Please sony send update.  laptop looks and works great otherwise, but no way I can keep it like this.
