Wireless capability is turned off

Hi, today I've install a fresh copy of windows 7 and at the begining everything was fine. I've installed everythink I need and then I spot that fn buttons doesn't work. I was install the three vaio's utilities but the fn buttons still not working. So I decided to install the XP version of the utility ( like for the card reader - it works fine with XP drivers), but after this installation wireless card stop working and windows detects that problem: "Wireless capability is turned off". So I try to activate it, but with ni success. Then I reinstall again Windows 7 and the problem was still there!! After this for a 3th(!) time I've reinstall win7, but this time I delete first 100mb and the partition and create them again. The result was the same! Please help!

USER-906009,

What is the model number of your VAIO PC? You can turn on the Wireless by using the Windows Mobility utility within Windows 7.

1) Click on Start
2) Type Windows Mobility Center
3) Click on Turn wireless on

Re: Wireless capability is turned off

I've started a ubuntu 10.10 live cd and that solve the problem Smiley Happy. Somehow this wireless capability is turning on and off on hardware level and that is why the preinstalation dosen't solve the problem. And the next I want to ask is why downloaded utility from win7pro section show me "this is only for windows vista" message??? That is the source of all my problems with this sony vaio notebook!!!

Re: Wireless capability is turned off

Go to Vaio Smart Network utility and slide the switch to "on". This should take care of your problem.

Re: Wireless capability is turned off

Just take out your battery for a few minutes and put it back. Don't worry about anything else. I did everything you guys have done for a whole day before I stumbled upon this stone age formula. Felt like ****** !!

All the best !!

Re: Wireless capability is turned off Windows 10 Viao

Hi.  You just saved my a$$  Smiley Happy    Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I am writing my story below in case some other person jusy upgrading to Windows 10 has same wifi issue.

I have a Sony Vaio,  Series E.  I was runnuing windows 7 for years. Love the laptop (with backlite keys) so when the HD started having booting issues (not sure if hardware or just win 7 issues) , I decided to buy a SSD drive.

I bought one of those $8 dive caddy's that replaces the optical drive with a HD or SSD.  It all worked great.  Long story short, since I had cloned my original drive, I felt safe to try teh Windows 10 free upgrade.  That went very smoothly and all seemed 100% operational.  All weekend I used the PC with no issues.

However, when I got to my office, the wifi security code had changed at work, so I tried to just change the key.  Eventually I got that changed, but in the process my laptop wifi turned OFF.  The windows 10 control did not work.  I tried uninstalling the Qualcomm Atheros driver, reboot, everything.  Just about ready to rollback, I found this thread.

Indeed, your advice to find the Vaio Smart Network utility (which I had never had to use in win 7 before) - it worked.  That turned the wifi adaptor back on.  I pinned taht o task bar!

Thanks again,

Jamie

Re: Wireless capability is turned off Windows 10 Viao

Its a new laptop for me,secound hand..

It was working - now its not, I did reset the modem and have had to update the wifi password on all devices.

So I thought this problem "as above " was just a settings problem.

I did all the above, even the stone age ifx, Still the wifi was not able to enable,

The problem has now been solved by ---

"This is making me look real smart "  when putting the battery back in, i looked around the laptop and found a small slide switch marked "" WIFI"

3 hours later I flicked the switch and entered the new password and its working.

I think this falls under the heading of "opperator error"

I think some of the above people may have had the same problem, but no one wants to own up to the solution.

Re: Wireless capability is turned off Windows 10 Viao

I had the same problem and solved by activating wifi with Vaio Smart Network . However , then it switches off and I need to repeat the process many times a day . The same happens to you?
Thanks!!!
