Did you already try the registry fix suggested by TonyM on page 1of this post?

If that doesn't work, it's most likely a hardware problem. You can get a replacement online, for example, www.ebay.com. Or via Sony Parts:

http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-accessories.pl

If you post the model number of your laptop I can help you find those parts.

You may need to consider a replacement drive. Remember, optical drives are mechanical and eventually fail over time.

Find a replacement online

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=VPCSA+bluray+drive&_from=R40%7CR40%7CR40&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_t...

Or from Sony Parts

CD/DVD Drive doesn't even show up in device manager. It was working fine a few weeks ago. I have tried system restore with no luck. Model #VGN-CR220E

I have tried the uninstalling of the dvd drivers like you have listed, I also unscrewed the whole back and cleaned it out. But my laptop still wont read discs. It makes noise and the pointer spins like it's trying, but nothing. Its a sony vaio model PCG-7113L.
PLEASE HELP

[ Edited ]

if the device isn't showing up in device manager, there's a good possibility that the drive has failed. For the VGN-CR220E dvd drive, get a replacement online. Make sure the molding matches your computer:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=VGN-CR2+dvd+drive&_from=R40%7CR40%7CR40&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_tr...
