Recover Vaio laptop to a new hard drive

How can I use my recovery disks to reinstall Windows to a new hard drive used to replace one that died?  At the end of the install, I get a message saying tht Windows oculd not load on the current hardware configuration, presumably because it does not recognize the new HD.

Hello,

What is the model # of the computer?

http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/support-info.pl?info_id=264#notebook

It is recommended to use compatible hard drive only. The specification of the new hard drive should be supported by the computer.

Check if the hard drive is listed in the BIOS.

Restart computer, press "F2" key to log into BIOS. (For Windows 8, Assist button then F2)

Re: Recover Vaio laptop to a new hard drive

The computer has a Model Number PCG-1211L listed on the label on the back.  However, on the lower right edge of the screen, model VPCS111FM is engraved, and this is the Machine Name that shows up on the Main screen when I press F2 while starting.  This same screen shows that a 500GB hard drive is recognized, but no additional details.  The hard drive I have installed is a 500GB Seagate with 16MB cache and 7200RPM.  It requires up to 6GB SATA and is backwards compatible to 3GB/s SATA.  The model number appears to be ST905003N3A1AS-RK.  Is this compatible?

Re: Recover Vaio laptop to a new hard drive

It's because the HD is different than the original.

Unless you have a identiacl HD to the old one it will take

a windows install disk and your sticker number to reload

and work. You will have to install all of the drivers

manually. You may be able to download a image of

windows from microsoft and use your number.

Re: Recover Vaio laptop to a new hard drive

Thank you.  Two questions:

  1. How and where do I download a Windows image?
  2. If I use my Windows number, which is from an OEM version that came with the original computer, to activate the downloaded version, won't the same thing happen with Windows not loading?

Hello,

The hard drive shipped with computer is 500 GB, 5400 rpm, Serial ATA with Impact Protection. It is recommended to use compatible hard drive only.

Refer the following link for Hard Drive replacement instructions:

http://www.docs.sony.com/release/989201342_VPCS1_series_HDD_CRU.pdf

You may contact Sony Backstage Team for the hard drive up gradation:

http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId...

By windows image are you referring to the recovery discs? If yes, you may check with Sony Authorized Parts Distributor:

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/support-info.pl?info_id=927#place_order_9

You may contact Sony service team to re-image the hard drive:
