restore vaio VPCSA2CFX (windows 7) to factory settings without windows CD from BIOS

hi,

I have a VPCSA2CFX laptop with Windows 7 Home premium. I do not have a windows CD for the same.

I suddenly lost my Ethernet connection on my computer, however, the wireless connection still works. I started getting the yellow exclamation on the network connection.

I have another computer that is working on the same ethernet connection through the same modem and router, so I know there is no problem with the network.

I have also downloaded the device driver again on my laptop and double-checked to make sure all the drivers are updated.

I have also checked the TCP/IP properties and it is set to dynamic. I did some google searches to fix the problem and even ran the ipconfigall/renew, dnsflush, refresh, etc. and that did not help either.

So, it seems like my only solution is to restore the computer to factory settings (as system restore has not helped either).

When I tried hitting F8 upon starting Windows, it took me to Vaio Care, and that is not restoring the sytem to factory settings.

So, I pressed F2 on start up and it took me to the BIOS screen, but I don't know what to do there. Can you please let me know how I can restore my computer to factory settings without a CD.

I'd appreciate your earliest help with instructions.

Thanks.

[ Edited ]

hi,

After having run the restore after my last post, the computer was running fine.

However, this morning it just turned off, and then kept turning on and off automatically.

So, I hit F8 and started it in safe mode with networking and that worked. After backing up my work, I tried to restart agian in normal mode but as soon as the Windows icon showed up, it would turn off and then turn back on to the same point and couldn't move forward from there.

So, I hit F10 and skipping the rescue, started Recovery, it was 85% done to recovery and then required a restart (as it does during recovery) and after the restart as soon as the Windows icon appeared, it turned off, just like before the recovery.

So, I tried to restart now in safe mode, but now even that is not working as it is showing up with a window that states:

Windows cannot complete installation in Safe Mode. To continue installing Windows restart the computer.

(On the screen behind this pop-up window, it reads: Setup is starting services")

And If I hit ok, it asks me which mode, and of course, it is not working in Normal mode.

Now, I cannot even open it in safe mode.

Can you please let me know how I can get this computer to work...

Thanks in advance!

Hi, Sony_battery

What are the other options when you hit the F8 key? You may try selecting Repair Your Computer or Last Known Good Configuration if these options appear on your screen. If you will be able to enter Windows, make sure to backup all your important files. It seems the system is failing since this isn't the first time you encounter issues with your unit.

Hi Vincent,

Thanks for your response.

F8 shows all the standard options but none of them are solving the problem because the computer power just suddenly dies after it starts to boot and then in 2 seconds or so the power comes back up again and it starts the loop of trying to start windows.

So, I took it to a Microsoft shop and they ran the hardware test and said that the South Bridge of the motherboard failed the test, while the north bridge passed.

I was made to understand that it is because of that failure windows cannot be installed. I have done some google research and it seems like the southbridge failure is not so critical as Microsoft made it sound, but then I am not a pro, so I would really appreciate if some light can be shed on that for me....do I need to replace the motherboard to get windows reinstalled?

Additionally, I was told that the CMOS clock also failed the hardware test. I don't know the implications of that, so any clarification would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance
