Huh... not sure. I've tried a ton of stuff for the Optiarc device found on many forums. I'll take a look and see what happens.

Loss of Display Brightness Control - dim screen

VPCL116FX

I went through the steps (thank you, by the way!) and successfully installed Windows 10 on my VPCL116FX. Unfortunately, in the process I lost control of the screen brightness and it is stuck so low that I can hardly use the computer during the day.

It's as if the computer doesn't even recognize a monitor is connected anymore. I can't find anyone else who's had this issue. I tried updating drivers, messing with registry, and even looked into BIOS. No luck. I then reinstalled Windows 7, but the function still isn't there!

Does anyone know how to restore the ability to change the screen brightness w/ the backlights? Preferably with Windows 10?

There a number of posts in this forum for the dimness issue you have described, including this thread and also in this thread here with the useful stuff on the second page.

Re: Windows 10 installation on a VPCL116FX using a NVIDIA GEFORCE GT 240M DRIVER PROBLEM

This is the solution that ENABLED BRIGHTNESS CONTROL for my Sony VPCL116FX after updating to Windows 10:

Install OEM drivers in this order, restarting between each:
  1. Sony Firmware Extension Parser Device Driver
  2. Sony Shared Library
  3. Setting Utility Series
  4. VAIO Event Service

Re: Windows 10 installation on a VPCL116FX using a NVIDIA GEFORCE GT 240M DRIVER PROBLEM

Excellent work Darren. Just a few points to add. DO not forget to run your setup program with admin privilidges otherwise fail. Also I suggest you to do a Custom install and check the clean install tickbox. Installer won't install NVDIA Experience and the Networking compoents (perhaps I do not have these), but rest will work like a charm.

Performed on SONY VAIO VGN-AW120D with NVIDIA Geforce 9600M GT.

Question:

If we install this modified driver in Windows 7 before the upgrade, I was wonderin if Windows 10 would be able to upgrade the system (Using the DVD install route). If that works that would save a lot of time and hassle to many. Is there a brave soul out there that tried this?

Re: Windows 10 installation on a VPCL116FX using a NVIDIA GEFORCE GT 240M DRIVER PROBLEM

Hi,

i found recently that Nvidia provides a new legacy driver version, 341.95. In comparison to 341.92 there are three Windows 10 security issues fixed:

Windows 10 Fixed Issues

  • Kernel driver escape can allow access to restricted functionality. CVE-2016-2556
  • Kernel driver escape allows privileged memory access. CVE-2016-2557
  • Kernel driver escape allows untrusted pointers. CVE-2016-2558

The CVSS base score is high. So i guess it is recommended to update, if not already done. To do this, you have to follow the same modification and installation procedures as described in this thread.
