Re: How to boot safe mode?

Mike,

1) Turn off the PC
2) Press the assist Button
3) Select Recovery
4) Select Advance
5) Select Command Prompt
6) Enter the following command : "bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy"
7) Restart the PC and tap on the F8 key
8) The legacy menu appears. Select Safe Mode

Re: How to boot safe mode?

Peter,

Your instructions for acessing the legacy menu is great, I can easily access the menu tapping the F8 button during bootup.  I am having a problem with the laptop actualy booting into safe mode.  I have a vaio SVT laptop with windows 8.  After selectin Safe Modle with COmmand Prompt, the system boots up normally, I am trying to get rid of the Mandiant virus and all instructions tell me to boot into Safe Mode.

Re: How to boot safe mode?

Hi Peter

I have a Vaio VGN AR 61E with no Assist button.  How do I access Safe Mode?

I can only access Vaio Recovery Centre F10 which confirm Hardware is fine.  No restore point and struggling with Data Rescue too.  F8 or F8+Shift doesn't work either.

Running Windows 8.1 but cannot get out of Reboot Loop to access OS or Windows.  Problem occured after updating drivers using IObit software.

Any suggestions?

Re: How to boot safe mode?

Run MSConfig.exe
go to "Boot" tab
Check "Safe Boot"
then reboot the system.

Hi michaelbeurlen

Welcome to Sony Community!

I am really sorry to hear this issue. Kindly try these troubleshooting steps:

  • Power cyle the unit - turn off the laptop, remove the battery and all peripherals then press the power button for 5 seconds OR look for a pinhole on the bottom of the unit, then push it for 5 sec using a satefy pin.
  • Reset BIOS.
  • Clean the keyboard, remove any dirt or dust (especially the Function keys). Make sure as well that we don't have any stuck key/s.
  • Repeat the process. Restart the laptop then while hitting F8
  • If these wont work, you may try to perform a Full Format Recovery, F10

Unfortunately, we are unable to assist customers outside of the US. We kindly recommend visiting our Sony Global Web site for information on contacting the Sony Support Center in your region at http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/Support/.

Hope these help.

Thanks,

Vincent
