USB to VGA adapter to add 2nd external monitor - how to find USB version for my VPCSA2CFX laptop

[ Edited ]

hi,

I am looking to buy a Startech USB to VGA adapter to add a second external monitor to my VPCSA2CFX laptop . I want to make sure I have the correct USB version - how do I find that out on my laptop?

Also do I need any additional drivers/software etc. to install a second external monitor?

I already have 1 external monitor connected through the VGA port, and I have my laptop monitor, so I want to use this USB to VGA adapter to be able to add 1 more external monitor. I can use 3 monitors (inclusive of my laptop monitor) with my laptop, correct? Please let me know.

Thanks.

Hi sony_battery,

Welcome to sony Community!

Your laptop has 2 ports of USB version 2.0 and 1 port of version 3.0. Normally, 3.0 is color blue while the 2.0 is white. No need to install a software when using an external monitor. Yes, you can set up multiple monitors.

Regards,
Jen

Re: USB to VGA adapter to add 2nd external monitor - how to find USB version for my VPCSA2CFX laptop

hi Jen,

Thanks for your response.

I purchased the product and installed it only to realize that my computer is not allowing me to use the 2nd external monitor as an extended display. It is only giving me the option to duplicate either screen 1 (of my laptop) or screen 2(of my 1st external monitor). Is it true that I cannot have 3 extended displays (1 of my laptop and 2 of my 2 external monitors).

Look forward to reading the response.

Thanks

Hi Sony_battery

You may use any third-party devices on your Sony Vaio computer but there is no guarantee that it will work without any issues. I did a little research about this and I think, this is your device: StarTech USB to VGA External Video Card. Make sure to plug it in the USB 3.0 port and the driver is installed. Check also for any settings of the device.

The details on that page are quite limited in terms of the specifications but the laptop should meet the device required specifications:

  • OS: Windows 2000/ XP(32/64bit)/ Vista(32/64bit)/ 7(32/64bit)/ 8(32/64bit)
  • USB video card supports resolutions up to 1920x1200

Kindly run Vaio Update and Windows Update to download and install any outdated software for your laptop. Again, since this is a third party device, this device may or may not work. For best assistance, you may contact StarTech

Best regards,

Vincent
