VAIO CARE FILE REMOVED BY WINDOWS DEFENDER, VAIO CARE NO LONGER WORKS

Hi, Earlier today Windows Defender (Windows 10) quarantined the following file as a threat:

file: C:\Program Files\Sony\VAIO Care\Iolo\ioloToolsTypeLib.dll

The following info appeared in Windows Defender:

Misleading:Win32/Chekuem
Alert level: High
Status: Quarantined
Date: 02/02/2018
Recommended action: Remove threat now.
Category: Potentially Unwanted Software
Details: This program displays deceptive product messages.
learn more
Affected items:
file: C:\Program Files\Sony\VAIO Care\Iolo\ioloToolsTypeLib.dll

Unfortunately, I accidentally and stupidly pressed 'Remove', before I'd read the whole thing, and since then VAIO Care will not work.

I tried restoring my computer to an earlier time, using a restore point only a few days old, but could not do so, apparently because a file was 'missing'. I am assuming Windows Defender has deleted the said file i.e.:

file: C:\Program Files\Sony\VAIO Care\Iolo\ioloToolsTypeLib.dll  and as a consequence disabled VAIO Care. Is there any way I can recover/download/replace the missing software/file and so get VAIO Care operational again? The only option I seem to have at present is to use a System Image from several months ago, but I don't want to do that if there is a simpler way. I have to confess I'm pretty useless with computers so any advice would be welcome. Thanks!

Re: VAIO CARE FILE REMOVED BY WINDOWS DEFENDER, VAIO CARE NO LONGER WORKS

[ Edited ]

Hey, I encountered the same thing just now, Vaio Care couldn't work anymore,

and I restored the removed file, it's simple, here's how, hope it helps, note that I'm not using an English Version of the Windows,

so I'll have to try and translate the functions for the Windows Defender involved:

1. Open the Windows Defender, clike the "History" Tab.

2. Choose the third option, which probably says "All the detected programs" or something like that, and then click the "View details" button below.

3. Now you should see the "Misleading:Win32/Chekuem", check the box before it, and click the button "restore file" below, now the removed file should be restored successfully.

4. Don't forget to then click the "Allow this program" button, so it won't bother you again.

If the warning persists, update the defender virus database, do a quick scan again and reboot the computer. That should clear things up. Or you can just ignore it.

I hope this helps Smiley Happy

Re: VAIO CARE FILE REMOVED BY WINDOWS DEFENDER, VAIO CARE NO LONGER WORKS

Hi Poissons0228,

Thanks so much for taking the trouble to try and help, but sadly there is a problem...

Maybe my version of Windows Defender is different from yours, but whatever the case there are no boxes to tick so I can't restore the file. All I can find in view details is:

Misleading:Win32/Chekuem
Alert level: High
Status: Quarantined
Date: 02/02/2018
Recommended action: Remove threat now.
Category: Potentially Unwanted Software
Details: This program displays deceptive product messages.
learn more
Affected items:
file: C:\Program Files\Sony\VAIO Care\Iolo\ioloToolsTypeLib.dll

There appears to be no way to do anything further with the above information.

As I said in my first post, I stupidly trusted Defender and clicked on 'Remove' (the recommended action) and I think Defender deleted the file from the computer - which is why I couldn't restore the computer to an earlier state using system restore (it said there was a missing file).

I think the file no longer exists in the computer, I believe that all I have left is the above record of the event.

I suspect I need to download the file from an external source (if that's possible!) and then re-install it. I just don't know where to look for it.

Anyway, thanks again for replying, I really appreciate it. If you have any more good ideas, please let me know.

Also, I'm glad you were able to fix your own Vaio Care!

Re: VAIO CARE FILE REMOVED BY WINDOWS DEFENDER, VAIO CARE NO LONGER WORKS

Hi All

I had to make a snap decision to remove this file also.

Just in case it helps someone else, I found mine in "Windows Security Essentials" (which I understand is the replacement to Windows Defender).

I was able to restore the files from there.

Re: VAIO CARE FILE REMOVED BY WINDOWS DEFENDER, VAIO CARE NO LONGER WORKS

Hi dougc,

Sorry for my delay in replying.

Thanks so much for trying to help with the link - I've not tried it yet as I've a medical emergency going on with an aged parent and don't have time to go through the whole thing properly.

Defender is now flagging up other Vaio Care software as being a threat - I suspect the latest Windows Defender definitions are mistaking safe software for something sinister...?

Hopefully l'll be able to return to the thread iin a few days.

Take care.

Re: VAIO CARE FILE REMOVED BY WINDOWS DEFENDER, VAIO CARE NO LONGER WORKS

Hi Poissonso228,

Sorry my delay repyling - family medical emergency going on.

Many thanks for the kind offer - I will think about it - just a bit worried about posting my email address on the site in case some hacker gets hold of it.

I will try dougc's suggestion first - please see my reply to him.

Take care.

Re: VAIO CARE FILE REMOVED BY WINDOWS DEFENDER, VAIO CARE NO LONGER WORKS

Hi ghuth,

Sorry I couldn't reply sooner.

Thank you for this - nice idea, but the file appears to have been completely deleted from the computer, which is why I couldn't restore my computer to an earlier state (due to a 'missing file').

I hope we can keep this thread open for a few days until I'm able to return to it, but right now I need to focus on the medical situation going on with my father.

I will be back when I can - hopefully with the problem solved.

Thanks again and take care.

Re: VAIO CARE FILE REMOVED BY WINDOWS DEFENDER, VAIO CARE NO LONGER WORKS

hey! had the same issue after deletet the files via defender.... even sony support wasn't able to help as they stopped an ongoing support after windows 10 update... my solution:

1. find the windows installer-package for sony vaio care. its cd8eef.msi in c:windows/installer

2. execute cd8eef.msi. it will let you remove vaio care from your system

3. execute it again it will let you reinstall vaio care

and vaio care should work again as before... at least it did so in my case

if you don't find/have cd8eef.msi anymore on your computer as/or it was deleted by defender.... just copy it from a friends computer who also have a vaio with vaio care on it or if no other source i can send it to you.

all the best

Alfred
