Tips for Posting Inspirational Ideas

Do you want your idea to stand out from the others on the Join the Inspiration portal? Here are some tips that will help you accomplish just that, along with some examples for how you can craft convincing text.

Remember the Search field: Don’t forget to search the community before submitting a new idea. We’d hate for you to waste your time writing something up that has already been submitted or already has an answer.

Draft your idea: To help the community really understand what you’re suggesting, try to put the idea in the form of user stories and be sure to include your rationale and an idea of customer value. The more we know about your idea – who it’s for, what the motivation is, and what the actual item is, the more accurate we’ll be when it comes time to prioritize and size it.

Consider using the following user-story format: As a customer I want (ADD IDEA/INNOVATION HERE) which provides these benefits (LIST PERKS, BENEFITS HERE).

Some things to include:

  • The Something: what is it that the user wants to do – the goal and/or desire?
  • The Benefit: why do we need it, what will it accomplish, and what value(s) can be derived?
  • Add additional descriptive content, for example…
    • The category or component your idea is about (e.g. blogs, REST API, user authentication, integration, kudos, Social Support, etc.)
    • Screenshots, pictures, drawings, process diagrams, etc.
    • Examples of other places or products where you’ve seen the feature or something like it
    • A sense of priority or desired timeframe
    • If you’re feeling really generous, feel free to write down some acceptance criteria too!
    • And finally, don’t forget to fulfill your civic duty and show your support for those items you like and agree with by adding your Me Too to those ideas.
